I dont expect too many Cricket fans here, but still...
In almost 40 years of One Day International Cricket, the ever double hundred scored by Sachin tendulkar of India against South Africa at Gwalior, India. Phenomenal!!!
India scored 401/3 in 50. SA at the moent ar 17/0 in 2.
Oh, lots of silly Indian commentators and journalists and even fans were also suggesting that he should retire. However, after a brief lull, he seems to have caught the second wind, for the last year or so he is batting like a man possessed. Two back to back centuries in the two preceding test matches against SA and now this.
He's one of the last great players that I truely respect. I think its proper that he achieves this before his retirement, as no-one has ever come close to his skill, sportsmanship and honour. Sachin is a living cricketing god!
Sadly the new generation of 'youngsters' are mostly meatheads and its little wonder that cricket has lost its way recently (espec in Australia).
You would be surprised that it's not the first double hundred in an International ODI..
As much as we like to follow Men's cricket mostly we ignore women's cricket
I am very proud to say that Belinda Clark from Australian Women's team scored 229 not out way back in 1997 in Mumbai, India. . She has a very impressive resume and considered a legend.
I saw a news report in Australia many moons ago that went something like this, "Miss Blahblahblah is suing the Australian Womens Cricketing Association (or something like that) for discrimination on the basis that she is not a lesbian...." I could have heard it wrong, but surely there is something fishy going there.
You are right, we generally think of Men's Cricket. Sorry. I didnt know about Belinda Calrk's double although I have known of her for a long time. BTW, I am a fan of Lisa Sthalekar.
Words fail me when I try to even make sense of the achievements of the Little Master. And for all his dominance in international cricket for more than 20 years, the man has been a paragon of virtue off the field.
In an era when sports icons such as Tiger Woods, Alex Rodrigues, Andre Agassi have demonstrated that the crown of greatness is not an easy one to wear, Sachin Tendulkar has been a role model and an inspiration (nay, nothing short of a national institution) for more than a billion Indians (and dare I say, cricket fans and lovers around the world).
Here's a toast to the greatest cricketer (perhaps sportsman) of the modern era!
Guys the first ODI which India won again SA by one run last week...well it was due to an amazing diving effort from the master himself on the field in the penultimate delivery...he saved one run and the next ball India won by one run...a true Legend in all terms
