Hello, I am set to enter unemployment soon and I am wondering if it is worth it to take a 20% contract job (8 hours a week) for about 10 months or not. What positives or negatives are there and would it impact my overall financial RAV benefit? Is it better to be employed by the company for the 20% or be a self-employed contractor?
Self employment is complicated - I would suggest taking the direct employment. But best to talk to RAV - is the contract flexible (can you fit it around other work?) - would you be looking for 100%?
The contract would be for one day a week, sometimes two but average of 8 hours a week for 35 weeks. Thank you for the tip about self-employment as I agree. I would be looking for 100% as I would like to receive (and need) as much unemployment money as possible.
As it is, you need an 80% job that matches the 20%, obviously that restricts you and makes many 100% jobs unavailable. But it would probably increase your income and extend how long the unemployment days last, which is of course a good thing.
I would want it to be unlimited so you can leave at any time, with the usual 1 month notice period. This turns to two months in the 2nd year, if the 20% employment lasts that long, so I'd want the one month explicitly in the contract.
