We've "done" Amsterdam, Paris, London. She quite fancies Rome, or, indeed Venice. Orient Express sounds neat - but my dad's doing that for my mother for her 70th birthday... Barcelona is beautiful - I had a great time on a flying business visit there. She's very open to the whole thing being a surprise, so long as she is informed well in advance and gets to choose.
I've been thinking maybe St Petersburg. Our Anniversary is towards the end of July.
Sorry, having just read *when* your anniversary is, I strongly advise against Istanbul at that time of the year. Too hot and humid. However, my second choice would be St. Petersburg, never been but really really want to go. Or Riga... or... gaah, so much to travel, so little time.
Agreed! I visited Venice once in August and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Full of tourists clogging up alleyways and lets not even talk about the gondola jams!
And at war with Britain... Iceland is definitely my cup of tea, but not my wife's.
Love it.
Good point about Venice. Didn't think of that. I was in Norway in July a few years ago and loved the white nights. St Petersburg definitely seems to be in the running now. ( We help with summer camps for orphans in another part of Russia, so we already like being in that country ).
...I would take her somewhere out of the ordinary...the Italian or French countryside are quite charming and romantic (yes people, LIB is talking love...and I'm not on drugs)....generally those places are also less packed and very friendly, unless it's the Swiss countryside where everything is closed and you smell cow manure everywhere.....and both Italy and France are easily accessible by car or train...
I'd go to Bermuda, because it's amazing this time of year. Go for a week, BA flies there bi-weekly me thinks. Pink sand beaches, clearest sea water ever. Time of my life (got engaged there).
Or go to Lisbon, it's not too touristy, and I've always wanted to go myself.
Take her for a nice Portugese dinner (Nandos) with some Tinta Roriz wine, and Fado music in the background. If you do take this advice, please remember that I'VE NEVER BEEN, but have done all the research and will be going soon.
