419 Scam of the Day [Email Scams, Phishing, etc.]

SBB wants to pay me money back. How sweet of them considering I’ve not used their services in at least a decade:
originally in German:

“We would like to inform you that you have been billed twice. You will be asked to complete a refund form on our website.
The amount will be transferred to your credit card within 24 hours after submission of your request.
You can get your money back easily, quickly and safely right here by clicking below.

There is a warrant out for my arrest. At least that what the guy said on the phone. Irregularities with my Swiss ID. I hung up . And they called 1 hour later. In both cases a recorded message.

Is that why your cat went in disguise?

Right on.

Most of the ones I get these days come through like this so I don’t even know what they’re about. :joy:

They called again today. I did not take the call.

I got to see the text today! Not that it meant anything.

This one sent from [email protected]. I am a Swica customer.

scary…is it because they tapped into some of your email exchanges, they can read the apps on the phone, or there has been a hacking of data from swica, unreported?

The footer address (which wouldn’t fit) is from a different branch of Swica than mine. I suspect it’s a mass phishing attempt and I just happen to be a customer.

I get these from companies I have nothing to do with too…

The text in that email doesn’t even make sense.

Let’s see if I get one too as I’m with swica. Wonder if swica knows this is happening?

Another scam. Translated.
“Dear Customer,
We are pleased to announce a refund of CHF 319. This amount is available to you based on our most recent statement.
Important: Please claim your refund by May 23, 2025, as the amount will expire after that date.”

Got another of those letters in the post claiming we’d won something from the EuroMillions lottery the other day. Since we never play it’s a little bit difficult to win anything.

I don’t get many spam calls as I’m very private about my phone-no. (my internet suppliers etc. all don’t have it).

But the past few weeks I got quite a few and the interesting bit is that the “caller” always have the same preselection (like 079, 078 and what ever is out there now) and then the first 3 digits are also the same as mine.

I wonder if that is a trick to tell the subconscious the number is familiar, Pretty smart move actually I wonder how many fall for that. I remember the very first time I looked twice as well and only then realized that what grabbed me was the familiarity with the number - my own number.

So remember, the only trustworthy caller is one where a familiar name pops up.

Well yes, but no. I use my phone for my apartment rental, even listed on the website, so I often get unknown callers, sometime even from foreign dialling codes I don’t recognise. There isn’t really any downside to answering calls, spam/scam or otherwise, as long as you apply suitable filters as you listen to them. It’s not rocket science to recognise that this is not someone looking to book a room and just hang up.

My wife has been getting almost daily SMS from “Sunrise”, but it’s probably a scammer.

Effectively, Sunrise started to shutdown today (10.06.2025) 3G antennas. It is necessary to activate VolTE options. Sunrise provides a guide to do this for several phones.

However, nowhere in this guide there’s a recommendation to type a code composed of #s and numbers in the phone to activate this option. This is the shady part of the SMS. I’ll check later what happens to the phone after typing #8**********#.

Ace, you’re stating the obvious.
It would be pretty stupid not to answer calls from numbers not already stored in your phone

If sunrise gives clear advice on it’s website, why bother with info from sms you’re not sure of in advance?
Some people deserve to get scammed.
Do we need to warn your wife?

I never answer calls from unknown numbers. I figure if it’s important enough they’ll either leave a message or call again.
Of course if I was running a business like Ace is it would be different but then I think I would probably have a phone and number dedicated to that rather than use my private number.

Same here and yes I used to have a different number for business.

I even tell them on the combox to leave a message or not expect me to react if they’re most likely not stored in my phone. I think that is pretty idiotproof - most people know their chances of being stored as an acquaintance.

Well yes, but that’s what you appeared to be saying

As for separate numbers, neither personal nor business calls are common enough to justify two numbers. Spam calls are easy enough to spot, so why bother?
