If that anecdote was the full picture, I would expect them to decline in the polls. I think it is rather likely that at least one fifth of the voters would not shed one tear if migrants were brutalized.
I dont think that the drinkers in an obscure Bavarian pub count for much, even those in the CSU, a party that was only created to soak up the remaining nazis after the war.

It depends how you look at it, most ex-USSR republics did reasonably well after the “demerger” compared to Russia

I met one in Switzerland who spoke good English because his job in East Germany was listening in on Western air traffic.
He said it was mostly boring but he did listen in on the landing of Kennedy’s flight before the visit where he said he was a doughnut
Italy didn’t have a reunification yet they still have a poor south and a rich north, have had since dog knows when.
They (for several years) did get more pension points in the east though. I worked for some years in East-Berlin and got more points than I had working in West-Berlin.

That was because of pension harmonization. Initially pensions in the East were less than half of what they were in the West.

During the cold war the western and SU economies were way more decoupled than nowadays*. One cannot blame US for the collapse of the absurd centrally planned soviet “economy”; it was the other way around - the economic collapse caused the SU political collapse which in turn caused even more economic misery.
*At home, in the eighties, I had not a single product that would be imported from the West.

There’s a charming naivety in depicting Switzerland as a sunny place and people buying stuff on Züri Bahnhofstrasse. But, if a lot of people believes the grass is greener on the other side, no surprise why they want to burn their house down.
