Just had a Look at that Talkpal Thingy… No Klingon or Maltese.
Just using your own basic LLM can be pretty decent. You can practice chatting and also ask for explanations of grammar etc.
Low latency conversational AIs have now been released, but none have yet been commercialized for language learning, but I expect you can cobble your own within a year and commercial options will be available soon too.
Yeah, I have to explore it. I’m curious if a Qualcomm Elite + 16GB of RAM would be enough.
Even if you can’t run the LLMs and STT/TTS locally (I suspect STT/TTS will be too slow for you) you can use commercially provided APIs.
Many are free anyway and those that are not are still dirt cheap right now.
I use ChatGPT (audio version on my telephone). It is the perfect teacher! always supportive, and correcting your mistakes in such a positive-reinforcement way, it is a pleasure. That’s how I trained for my oral (and written) Goethe Institute exam. And it worked. I wish my BF were so sweet! (he says his ears bleed when I speak german). Yet, better than ANY AI (I have tried some others), is a sprache-tandem person. (sprachetandem.com) You might go through a hit-and-miss until you find the person that you click with, but once that you have that, it is worth; one or two hours per week of talking with a native on any subject that you enjoy is a real pleasure!
