Well, I have the roll down blinds, so I will use that as the seal (with a bit of DIY riggery to cover the rest of the gap for the window I put the hose through.

Nothing could be further from the truth... every summer my apartment is too warm, and a measly 300chf is more than a fair price for the 1-3 months a year where I need to sleep well. At the moment my sleep is simply awful, and the same can be said every summer when the sun shines, whether its 4 weeks or 12 weeks. Anyway, I have only been here since 2008 and we have had more than a few very warm summer periods that have made my apartment uncomfortably warm...
Who cares about "return on investment" in these kinds of situations? My sleep is pretty much priceless to me.

We bought an air conditioner after my first incidence of heatstroke this year and it was worth every penny. We now have two units and I work from home whenever it's this hot.
I totally agree. My Zurich apartment heats up quickly and I bought a powerful 14000 BTU split air conditioner after suffering through the first summer. Since I work mostly from home and my productivity drops like a stone when I'm uncomfortably hot the unit has paid for itself many times over. Not to mention how much better I sleep...
Yeah, you simply cannot place value on an air-conditioned place in Summer... it's like balm for the soul.

Though it is of course designed for one large-ish room, I imagine it will drop the overall temperature of the entire apartment (83m2) by a few degrees at least if I open my bedroom door... not to mention reduce humidity throughout.

I am now looking for another AC unit for my apartment with a view to it being the quietest possible monoblock solution for my bedroom. I am such a light sleeper that the one I bought last year, while working like a champ, is a bit loud for me to be fully comfortable with.

They are around 52dba so a fair bit quieter than the 65dba of my current unit...
I was wondering about this too, having decided this year to give in and get one. But I find the two fans we have going in the bedroom already quite disturbing to sleep. Will aircon be noisier? And if so, will its cooling the air down instead of blowing it around a bit mean that I sleep even if it is noiser? I wish I knew before I buy!
I am happy , that my flat is in a " passivhaus", so no problem to keep the flat cool, but this comes at a price (that i am willing to pay, a good night sleep a worth every penny).

The first flat (or studio) i rented here in zurich , has been direct under the roof, in the summer , it was unbearable, even when the window was open the whole night , it did not felt a bit cooler overnight, because the direction of the window was south west (got sunlight until around 10pm).
I got one tip for you:
Do the drying of your clothing in your flat, the evaporate of the liquid provides
a cooling effect to your flat.
Do medium warm shower , before going to sleep.
Yes, our apartment has the same issues, close to the roof and facing the evening sun. Noise and light from outside issues also mean we can't have the windows open while sleeping.
Go and try air conditioning units in Media Markt or similar, then you will get an idea how loud they are. The Delonghi PAC Silent series are regarded as some of the quietest and best, though of course they are not "silent", just quieter than most others.

In order to cool the room's air the AC unit produces warm/hot "waste" air that's usually blown out through the window. Seems you'll need some other way to get rid of it.
On that note, does anyone know off-hand where to get an attachment to seal the heat exhaust to a tilting widow or door (sideways or vertical)?

How do you get rid of the heat if using a portable/mobile AC? From the photo I saw from the links above, looks like you have to dig a whole from the rim of the window? Wouldn't that be an issue for rented property too?
The same places that sell the units, sell a sort of velcrose zipper thing that you fit into the open (just ajar) window so that the exhaust goes out and theoretically the material is enough to stop hot air getting in.

1) It performs very well - it's pretty powerful and does cool as well (we own one of those big ones but do not use it anymore).
2) It is very quiet. The big ones are noisy.
3) The big one we have does cool better, but fails to "move" the air. Not sure why.
That is a fan, not an air conditioning unit.
My point is that it outperforms the big one we own. Given its size.
Is the big one you own an air conditioning unit that electrically cools using refrigeration gas?
I went for a cheap OBI 12000BTU (65db) one + the window Velcro thing. It is powerful enough to drop our (large) bedroom down to 22c at night. The baby is back in sleeping with us as the nursery is in the south wing - and was 29c last night.
Its not the quietest but we all slept last night without disturbance - and it felt like heaven.
They are worth it just to run before you go to bed, then switch off for sleeping. I need to set mine up again as it's now getting unbearably warm in my bedroom at night.
