Airing flats - are the Swiss crazy?

More humid in NYC, but more rain in Switzerland. I think I saw stats once that Zurich has alot more rain than London.

CH is a very small country - but still can't generalize. Some regions are very much drier than others, like the Valais and Tessin.

Leaving a window on tilt in the winter is not a good idea because of the difference between the outside and inside temperature. We had a specialist at our house who was sent by the insurance company as we had to replace our bathroom ceiling. They were looking for the cause of the problem. The specialist told us never to tilt windows in the winter. After your shower, open the window fully for 5 to 10 minutes, then close it. Tilting a window is not a problem in the summer. He also said leaving cellar windows open in the summer increases the humidity in the basement.

Interesting comparing Zurich to London, I would have thought based on word of mouth that London had way way more rain, I think this just proves that the English like to complain alot . Enough of my thread hijack.

Cambridge (just fifty miles North of London) has less rain fall than Tel Aviv, Israel.

However, London isn't the U.K. and some parts, notably the North and some of the West are very wet compared with the South East.

We don't get much rain in London. What we do get is many days in a row where it looks like it really will rain any minute, but never does.

Cambridge and London are in France, no?

Not typical of the "UK"

Zurich is dry in winter and humid in summer. Seriously.

My Fensters are gekippt year round.

So to summarise, yes I need to air the flat, but 3 times per day is just the landlord covering their conservative Swiss arse?

Yea, if there's mold anywhere then they can blame you for it: "Didn't you read Paragraph 3, Section 8 Article 2 of the Houseordnung? ' Thau shall air thy wohnung 5x per day '"

Can you explain why ?

I agree that chilled beam systems are more efficient for air conditioning. You're comparing a pump to a compressor, very simple.

As for heating, there I still a simple energy balance. When you heat the air with forced air, you also heat the walls and floors, you're still putting the same amount of energy into the system, but you're keeping it further from leaving the desired heating area. A warm radiating floor will radiate outside as well, not to mention through the windows a lot easier than convective heat.

That being said, I am coming from a Canadian background where heating might be a bit more important than say austrailia.
