Yes, I was in a hurry, yes I did installation work at my own place, I'm an engineer, I can do technician's job, can't I, and no, I did not follow all the precautions. I switched off the circuit breakers, but the wrong ones. I did not check with a tool or the back of my hand before grabbing a live wire. It was a veeery long tenth of a second before the RCD activated.
Many years later, we bought an old Swiss place with a 2-wire only installation. Even before we moved in, our first investment was to have all the electric installation replaced with the 3 wire and RCD system (i.e. the current standard).
Not much later my son decided to check with his own fingers if a toaster is actually working and getting warn. Certainly he should have known better. He will never forget.
Of course nobody would need them, if there were never mistakes nor hardware faults...
