There is a school of thought that postulates that the end evolution of a society is one where consciousness is uploaded to a computer, no living body needed like it was in "The Matrix" just the consciousness is required. That would bridge the gap between reality and religion. Death would be just a transition to an "afterlife" where you could be downloaded to a virtual "you" for a new round.

Reincarnation, Valhalla, Heaven, Hell, all would be true and of our own making.

To do that you would not only need a really powerful computer but you would also need to understand how consciousness works and if you can do that you would also know how to create consciousness... And the world it lives in.

Would that make us "God?"

What ever it is we are in, it's hard to feel anything but small/insignificant compared to everything :

We live on a planet that orbits a sun, one of 100 billion in our milky way, and that milky way is just one of 125 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Just think what it would take to "fake" all that kind of universe, just for the benefit of 8 billion souls on a water planet.

(well unless Voyager bounces back off something it's just left our solar system and is now in interstellar space!)

You would not need to much in the way of computing power, your sim would just need to believe that all that universe is there, no reason to fake anything.

It simply blows my mind that humans have actually achieved interstellar space flight.
