Did you hear about use of amantadine in Covid treatment? What are your opinions?
There is an intense and ongoing discussion in Poland about using amantadine for heavy cases. The promoters say it is really effective. To my surprise, I read virtually nothing about this western media. The only case I know that the idea was brought up at the conference in Italy, but nothing besides that.
Personally I think I would wait for the results from the clinical trial before speculating about its usefulness as a COVID treatment. Understand that 90% of hypotheses don’t work out when tested in a clinical trial. Even the ones that everyone currently thinks work often don’t.
If this drug is not used for horses then little chance of success.
Seriously amantadine is not recommended for use in the United States for many years because of widespread antiviral resistance to this class of antivirals among circulating flu A viruses. Of course, the coronavirus is quite different from the flu virus, despite some other claims here, so it may do well in the trial.
