AOPA Switzerland is very active, flyins etc. I've been a member for years. www.aopa.ch
Because of the swiss weather, mountains and tight airspace, flying is more instrument as opposed to Texas VFR. Remember, "there are old pilots, there are bold pilots. But there are no old bold pilots".
Check out the Flug Museum in Dubendorf. It's a must for Pilots.
I have an FAA Instrument Rating and a good (detail-oriented or shall we say a...-retentive?) Swiss instructor, so I will avoid cumulogranite for now.
Thanks for the tip on the museum in Dübendorf, it's on my list once I got this JAR ticket in my hands.
Got another 2 flights in last weekend, Friday to Lommis and Triengen to practice short concrete and grass strips, and Sunday to Bern via "southern route" to get an intro to mountain flying and practice pilotage and dead reckoning.
If Mr. Meteo plays along I will get my nav flight (Friedrichshafen) and Alpen flight (Samaden) out of the way this weekend.
So is there a decent Swiss flying instructor out there who can help me to explore this great country from the air, and to stop my skills from getting even rustier?
Ideally someone based at the aerodrome in Lausanne who speaks decent English (or v-e-r-y s-l-o-w f-r-e-n-c-h...)
Most pilots (and flight instructors) in Switzerland speak English, it's the required radio language.
There is a pilot forum http://www.flightforum.ch/ that might have some info. Most flying here happens inside flying clubs. Not that my French is any good, but I think this http://www.gvm.ch/ is the Web site of the local flying club.
Norwegian PPL (and JAA-PPL) holder here, will take an expat position in Zurich from January 2008.
I do some recreational aerobatics and hope to hone my skills with an instructor somewhere. Found this club that looks good: http://www.birrfeld.ch/ Anybody who has been there?
I have flown into and out of Birrfeld during my transition training, nice little airport, pretty busy on the weekends, decent restaurant on field, can't say much about the flying club there.
I passed my skill test (in other parts of the world called a checkride) two weeks ago and now hold a beautiful ICAO pilot license and rating in my hand. They even gave me night VFR privileges.
So if anybody wants to see Zurich or the Alps or the rest of Switzerland from the air ...
There is at least one flying school at the Lausanne airport. I might not be a bad idea to go & have a look. The coffee at the cafe isn't bad either. I haven't dared eat there yet.
Some colleagues have started a new forum at www.corpjetchat.com , which is in its early stages, but is dedicated to the world of corporate aviation. It includes among its founder members some pilots operating out of Geneva. There will be plenty of scope for discussion there too.
(1) FAA announced they will issue new pilot certificates upon request that will confirm English level 4 ICAO proficiency. That should help the Swissies calm their fears / skip the test.
(2) BAZL also sent me a new Swiss license (free of charge - OMG) that confirms level 4 skills, so I will only need to take a test for my next renewal, which I hope to skip because of (1).
