Anyone been to Iceland?

And forgot one more thing. Sea-food including whale steaks and sharks (not fermented) can be tried at Saegreifinn - The Sea Baron in the Old Harbour area. Quite an atmospheric place to eat. We stayed in an apartment within 5 mins walk to the Old Harbour and it has become our favourite place! Don't be discouraged by the interior... They have a few halls :-)

Finally managed to go..

Raw whale meat tastes like liver, and hakarl smells like cat litter that hasnt been changed for weeks. If you manage not to breathe while eating it its tasteless

My daughters' trek last year was a great experience for them - even though the elder managed to get hypothermia in July!

Hello lovely people.

I am planning to visit Iceland for the first time in June.

I have googled and done my research for my trip. Now, I just want some inside info from fellow members, who either have been or are from Iceland, about the must see places or hidden gems that are not usually listed on the net.

I am planning to do the Golden Circle trip, all around the island.

Tips about restaurants, bars, cafes, local food, sightseeing, landmarks etc are all welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Haven't done Iceland till you've been on a horse!

Just visited last month to climb Hvannaskdalshnjukur with Icelandic Mountain Guides. They also do half day glacier treks if you would like to try that.

Biggest piece of advise: when renting a vehicle, get a 4WD.

I found a bunch of great Airbnbs to stay in. One in particular was in Selfoss that I loved. It was on a horse farm.

Many puffins are on Westman Island. I got great photos. If you go in the evening 6-8 PM to the tip of the island (called the windiest place in europe) they are around more. I also recommend the vegan/organic restaurant on Westman Island-Gott.

Lonely Planet Iceland book is really good for lodging/restaurants.

There are lots of hot springs other than the Blue Lagoon and most of the towns have a public pool/hot springs that's pretty affordable.

In Reykjavik, I'd recommend Harry's for dinner. It was delicious.

Just driving the ring road will give you a really enjoyable trip.

Thanks for the tips. Had a great time. Took a boat tour in Reyjkavik to check out the puffins. Was a bit of a disappointment.

Had dinner at Harry's. The lamb shank was fantastic.

Took a regular car as the intention was not to drive up to the glaciers this time around. Blue Lagoon was just ok. Saw a lot of horses, but did not book a riding excursion.

All in all, it was a great trip and I would love to do it all over again.

A 2 second search would have brought you this:

Thanks, CarlosR, threads merged.

Thanks Carlos. Will save this for my next trip. Definitely want to visit Iceland again.

I realize this is an old thread but I've just come across this drone video of some of the sights a visitor to Iceland might see... if it's not raining.

Thought someone might find it inspiring if they're thinking of a holiday next year.
