It ran for 13 seasons essentially in North American. Essentially about the generic amercian family and neighborhood in Texas.
It's very slow to get into, but once you see how deep the characters are developed and the commentary on 'life in america', the show is absolutely brilliant.

When I tell people I'm Portuguese they will ask either if I speak Spanish or Brazilian! Hello!? I do speak Spanish but not because I'm from Portugal!
Of course we all know the "do you/they speak Swiss" one.
My Chinese friend is constantly told by people how much they like sushi. She just tells them that she does to, what her favorite restaurants are, etc.
And a Austria friend of mine often got "I didn't know they spoke German in Australia."
I think people are just trying to be friendly. They don't KNOW that they don't know what they are talking about.
