are lost keys covered under your average apartment insurance?

Basic household insurance covers items stolen from the house, the clue is 'household'. It's to cover major loss from your house burning down or being broken to. It will not cover leaving your expensive camera or iPhone on a train, such things cost more as the risk is far greater.

Partially correct - which was a surprise to me.

A stolen handbag and contents are NOT covered in standard household insurance, only for burglary from the house itself. Luckily though, the additional jewellery coverage did cover the most expensive items

Checking to see if travel insurance does cover theft of items - will revert. I'm not optimistic

CC Who is your cover with? Usually the cover for lost and stolen keys is connected to your out of house cover part of the policy. This is certainly true in our case or in that of our Sister company Connect as here:

This means that they are only covered if you have an out of house add on to the cover. If you have for example a 3000 Franc out of house simple theft cover you can claim 1500 for stolen keys. If you have no out of house cover for anything then keys are not insured.

Also noteworthy: Liability insurances only tend to cover the loss of OFFICE or BUSINESS keys, cards etc.. NOT personal residences.

Just to clean up, and for the sake of others. Got the locks replaced a few days back. It was for 2, a door to the apartment and for the mailbox. Two other communal locks, for the entrance and another feature were not replaced. 2 locks + 4 keys, I was told the price should be less than 500 francs and I should get the bill sometime soon.

I guess there is a feature with multi-lock keys that doesn't require all locks to be changed. Thank God!

In case of a theft the insurance company bears the cost of Key or the complete set of Keys and Loack, whatever your rental agency asks for. I know it because I had asked this question to my insurance company.

Infact it is also covered if you loose your keys only if you insurance coveres the loss due to misplacement (e.g you loos your back on train and you are not sure if it was tolen or you missplaced it in travel)

So, I would suggest OP to to check with thier insurance compony and landlord.

Onthemove,

What were the circumstances of the loss that resulted in your insurance paying for the replacement?

- Simple loss outside the home?

- theft outside the home?

- theft in the home?

I'm trying to figure out if I am covered for a recent loss.

Cheers,

Paul

No you're not, you're trying to diddle your insurance company

Hi guys,

I have a bit of a situation at the moment, will gladly hear your views. I am leaving my flat in a few days, and a roommate was supposed to send me one of the keys through postal office. The letter did not manage to arrive for some unclear reason and was actually sent back to the sender - it's been 7 days and we have had no news since then.

The real estate agent is obviously expecting all the keys, and I am worried he might want to change all the locks because of the (so far) missing key. The thing is the key is not lost or stolen, but more "on a trip" (with a tracking number available).

Could the agent legitimately ask to change the locks in this context (since there's apparently little to no risk of burglary)?

My insurance (Smile Direct) told me that since the status of the key is unclear, it is too early to speak about covering any expenses that might arise. Hence I have no clue whether they would reimburse me should the locks be replaced... (with the possibility of the key arriving just a few days later).

Any thought on this matter?

Thank you,

Shaka

Why is their "little risk of burglary" ?

It's only what you are telling them, could be a complete scam too

You will have a few days to get the key back to the regie after handover, tell them you forgot it at your Mothers' house and it's being sent back right now and as soon as you've got it, you'll drop it over personally.

Or pay for a new lock

Thank you for your quick reply.

I was thinking that the Postal service tracking system showing that the package was still on its way would be a good proof in itself, but I guess they might question whether it's the actual keys that are inside... is that what you hint at?

Hopefully the situation gets clearer next week, and we can finally put our hands on the damned keys since this is driving me nuts. I really hope the regie will be understanding, even if it does not necessarily have to.

I don't mind paying new keys if I have to, since I might not be able to bring them in time - I'll pay for this temporary mess. It's changing the locks that would be frustrating since I kind of know where the keys are, and they are "simply in transit".

Thanks anyway,

Shaka

It doesn't really matter - you're liable in front of the landlord anyway and he can charge you for the replacement of the locks out of your deposit if he has to. Tell the truth, hopefully he'd understand and give you some time before making use of his right.

Post is liable for 500 CHF if the letter was sent registered, the rest you'd have to claim from your insurance or your friend or pay out of pocket or deposit.
