I agree. Not everyone fits the mold, and I never said they did. I do have friends who have high paying jobs, are successful, and they have tats. My points were: 1. Many career minded people don't want tats because they think they will be looked down upon. 2. The ratio of tattooed people is higher in lower skilled/paying jobs. Simple.
i am covered in tattoos (even on my hands) and have a great professional job in the Swiss. I find people here are more chill about it than they are back in Canada-land (where I'm from).
I still don't get it. For example, in my family all of us (excluding to parents) are tatooed. I am the lowliest of the tribe being un-educted n stuff, but the majority of my siblings have tatoos as well as well paid, qualified jobs! So what point are you making? The one about porn-stars? Well, you obviously don't watch much . Porn-stars are not heavily tatooed for that very reason!!!! One of my brothers, after doing a naked mechanics calander offered himself up to become the next....... insert male porn-star name here, none spring to (my) mind...... but was told tats are not well accepted in the porn industry. I think your point is that the people you have been naked in the shower with don't have tats!
What is there not to get?! I'm saying the RATIO!!! Don't you understand the concept of ratio? I'm NOT saying every single person who has a tattoo is a porn star and/or uneducated. Read other people's posts properly before you post silly diatribes that make no sense.
"un-educted n stuff"...it's open and shut, never mind...
I completely understand what you mean by ratio, but maybe you should word it better. So far, you've gone about being border line insulting - although I'm quite sure you haven't intended on doing so.
What I mean is saying things like "occupations that are frowned upon", and grouping construction workers with porn stars.
"Right all the porn stars, toilet cleaners and construction workers stand over there - you guys will most certainly have tats" ~joke~
In society, it was far more common for working class people to get tattoos than say the upper class. This is without a doubt and there's no debate on this.
But this has certainly changed with time, and it has become common place for middle and upper class society to get tattoos without the stigma that was attached in the past.
So yeah, i'm sure that more working and middle class people in western society will probably have more tats than the upper class do in ratio.
And looking forward 10 years I'm sure the stigma attached will become less and less negative (to those who find them negative at least).
This is my opinion anyways...
I do not intend to insult anyone, I'm also not saying that I frown upon people who choose an occupation I would not choose... however, many people DO frown upon people who choose work like the one I mentioned. I also do not "group" construction workers with porn stars, I simply say that these people frequently have tats.
...and as for i-b-deborah: very mature response, now stop proving the stereotype...
This is getting rather funny! upset people (person) typing away, i can picture it now
My 2 cents worth: No matter what is on your skin, wear it with pride. Think hard about whats under your skin. Especially when getting upset on a forum about nothing much at all!
By the way, I actually liked the very mature response! And I love tattoos, everyone likes something different, the lizard dude, the cat chic and the person that goes to an artist and gets "dragon number 34" off the shelf! They say alot about a person, where they are at in a stage of their life.
And you can break out of jail by drawing a complex map on yourself with them
Guess I'm a rarity too. Working on half sleeve number one... I'm 42, work in a professional job and am a woman.
As for the Swiss being accepting, they are more accepting of non-feminine dainty tattoos in hidden places on women than bigger/less girly tattoos on women.
I have a related concern (duh) and since this thread is 2 years old. I wanna know how it is these days being tattooed in swiss. And in a small nice village at that. Will i be ostracized for being heavily tattooed? Im aware that just being tattooed (one or 2 small pieces) is not a problem especially if its hidden. But what about one whole leg inked thigh to foot? Should i keep hiding and never wear skirts/shorts or should i not worry so much about it? thanks so much everyone. Im aware of the consequences but i came from another world (third world) and am pretty normal, not a metalhead and i wish to have the polite/pleasant neighbor image, so if sowing them would cause heart attacks, then i would keep it in the bed/bathroom (All other parts of house have no curtains).
Hi Stephanie
You should be totally fine. Yay tattoos!
Given the amount of flesh (and according tattoos) that were revealed in Zurich at the weekend in the lovely weather, I would say you are not alone. On the subject of whether it would be different out of the city areas, I can say that many of the cars parked round by us had AG / TG / SH plates so either some of the tattooed people came from there or they weren't afraid to mingle with the tattooed-of-Zurich.
I wouldn't worry about it. The wife of a friend of my husband has some pretty extensive artwork down her leg, neck and back and, as far as I know, has never had a problem with anyone (more than you would in any country, I hasten to add).
Tattoos are fine . If you like skin art , go ahead , tis your body.
There are some really shit ones out there, mind, and that must really grate ...
Any many are too generic to be anything else but a collectors badge to the rebellious phase of life
I have several really well inked mates - but I have never understood the need for chinese /japanese/celtic/native american style stuff when you have no link to those cultures
I would look a complete k**b walking through Wetzikon in full Inuit clothing ... isn't a japenese tat the same , if you have only traveled as far Berlin?
I think tattoos are widely accepted in Switzerland . Definitely more than calling the country "swiss".
I don't understand why anyone would even let the potential reaction of other people prevent them from getting a tattoo. If you want one, you're going to get one for yourself, not for anyone else. Why do you care? I got mine done in a town of 30,000 people in Spain. The majority called it "macarra" (thuggish or tacky), at which point I pointed out that it's a French horn, not a skull and crossbones and that I didn't get it for their benefit. So what if people don't like it? What's important is that you do.
For religious reasons I could/would never get a tattoo but I do appreciate it, if it has meaning to the person wearing them. I was in Tahiti and over there it is very meaningful and literally all over the body. It's beautiful. It represents family connections and stages of ones life. My sister-in-law just stamped herself with the cheesy tramp stamp. I can't appreciate that. I know it's not for me to appreciate but for her to enjoy, but tacky is tacky...
I always wondered about the "tramp stamp", how can she (or anyone for that matter) enjoy it when she can't even see it? Or is it for someone else to "enjoy"?
Some girl had a chinese tattoo on her back, it said "sweet-sour chicken". The tattooer took it from a chinese restaurant menu
relevant if you are considering:
According to the flowchart, I made the right choice!
That's funny, but in all seriousness, I stick to what I said. Get tattoos all over your face if you want to, you just have to be prepared to get stared at but not care about it. I've had nothing but positive feedback about my tattoo in Switzerland, which is definitely more than I can say for Spain. Then again, it is a great tattoo (so great, that even my grandad who hates tattoos - especially on women - said he thought it was beautiful).
I love my tattoo.
