I was just wondering if anybody can interpret this. What does it mean in reality? Are Australians now treated in a similar way as EU citizens or the only change is that they no longer require a visa to stay in Switzerland for longer than 90 days? I cannot find any official document in English related to this announcement. Perhaps, there are some in German or French.

Australian nationals also remain subject to the provisions governing the residence of foreign nationals in Switzerland. They require a permit if they plan to stay in Switzerland for more than three months or if they intend to work in Switzerland. They must apply for the permit from the competent authority in their intended place of residence or work before entering Switzerland.

Only for short entries. To work here permanently you still have the non EU regulations.
Switzerland distinguishes between a visa and a permit . A visa is the certificate that allows a foreign citizen to enter Switzerland. Some nationalities require visas, and others don't.
A permit is the authorisation that allows a foreign citizen to reside in in Switzerland. Citizens of all non-Swiss nationalities require permits. Permits for EU citizens are automatic, as long as they can demonstrate that they can support themselves. Many types of permits allow the foreigner to work, some do not, and some are for study purposes only.
With this distinction in mind, perhaps this part from the link you posted - about working in Switzerland - will be clearer:

The only change is that they don’t need the D visa in the passport to enter the country (if coming to live) - all other non-EU work permit requirements still stand.
