B-permit for Non-EU after 10 years

Hi,

I came to Switzerland about 8 years ago. I did my MSc, PhD and a Postdoc in a Swiss university. Now I work in the same canton I studied with an unlimited contract. Last week I got my first work permit B. On the backside of it, the LCF date mentioned is in 5 more years.

But to my knowledge, I can apply for permit C after 10 years in Switzerland if I fulfil the requirements and have a permanent job. Why is the LCF date different from the expected 10-year date?

PS: Throughout the last 8 years, I always had a B permit (first a student permit, then 6 months of job search permit, then a trainee/student permit for PhD and Postdoc).

You can apply for C anytime, as long as you fulfill the conditions. Depending of of you are EU or non-EU, your student years will only count in two years.

LCF libération du contrôle fédéral, more info in the SEM guidance (it’s the date the SYMIC foreigner database automatically spits out for ordinary C permit eligibility based on nationality and migration history). Vaud is the only canton I know of that deliberately communicates/indicates this date on permits

LCF’s basically say that if you wait until that time, you can apply for a C permit and you’ll get it unless you are a problem to society.

That said, you can also apply for a C permit before the LCF date. In your case, you need 2 years on your B permit before you can apply for your student years to count.

Hi pamu, I'm also a non-EU student who just finished his MSc. I'm applying for PhDs and I've already been in Switzerland on a student B permit for 3 years.

I was told by HR to be wary that we can only be on a student B-permit for 8 years in total (including PhD and Postdoc). So question: were you on a student B-permit for a total of less than 8 years? Was there ever a problem when it came to renewing the B-permit when you were already on the permit for 6, 7 years? (I read somewhere else on this forum that a non-EU PhD got their renewal denied after 7 years).

That's definitely not what it says in the link you provided (apart from the fact that the document is dated as of 2011 and still refers to SEM under old name ODM).
