This means, this B permit is restricted - bound to a specific employer. Nothing much to worry about - if you find a new job, new employer has to apply for "Stellenwechsel" for you. This is a routine for them, I went through this about 5 times before got an "Unrestricted" B, followed by C.
The problem may arise when your current job contract is terminated close to this B expiry - then you may have too little time to find a new job. Restricted B extension may be difficult when you have no running job contract.
I’d say it’s a little more than routine. Any new employer will have to prove a Swiss resident or EU national cannot be found for the position.
Depending on your nationality a C permit may be available after 5 or 10 years.

As said, any new employer will have to show why you should be allowed to change jobs. If the cantonal migration office agree then it can happen, if they don’t it won’t.
When you were employed your employer obtained a limited B permit for you. The likely justified to the cantonal authorities that you had particular skills that were not available from applicants resident in CH or EU nationals. They likely invested time, effort and money in this.
You now have a limited B permit and as long as you remain employed it will be renewed every year. If you get promoted within your organisation your status doesn’t change. Even if your job changes completely. But if you want to change employers then the new one has to do the same justification to the authorities.
After 5 or 10 years, depending on your nationality, you can apply for a C (permanent residency) permit. This permit will not be restricted.
After obtaining your C this opens the door to Swiss nationality, which is the subject of many other threads, just do a search.

I have done it and learnt that I can change any job at any kanton without the new employer asking for a new search from CH/EU etc. What "Selbst. Erwerbstätigkeit ist bewillgungspflichtig" means is not that you have a tied B, it means that kantonal authority has to approve (or not) if you want to be self-employed. Also a non-EU B permit holder with same notes as you have. Cheers.

I have a similar situation. I obtained a B permit through my employer (non EU, canton VD) following my PhD studies here. I have now decided to quit my job and I’m trying to understand whether the permit remains valid until its original expiration date... I’m getting different replies and it’s unclear what will the authorities actually do (I plan to sign up for unemployment).
In addition, since my permit was granted based on the fact that I have finished my studies in Switzerland (and therefore not subjected to the regular non EU quotas), would a new employer need to apply for a new permit for me or can I start a new job with my existing permit?
Any info would be appreciated!
You need to ask these questions to Lausanne "Service de la Population, Service Etrangers". If you are not speaking French, there used to be a few English speaking people there. I think there was only one person who did not, so you have a high chance of asking your questions and getting replies in English.
But almost all of these are already written on your permit.
And if you quit, chomage becomes your employer and you normally have a right to stay until your chomage / permit expires (whichever comes first I think), but they will tell you specifically that they will not renew your permit.
In your place, I would not quit until I found a new job; it is a slippery slope for non-EU.
Basically, no. Since you no longer have a job you no longer have a permit since it’s tied to the job.
Whether you qualify for unemployment and whether RAV will become your employer depends on whether they think you can get another job here relatively easily.
As taskalem said, I wouldn’t quit until you find a new job and know that the change of employment has been approved by the cantonal migration office.
