My bag was stolen yesterday evening. My house key was in it along with a copy of my old permit (has address on it). I could get in as other family members were home.
Im not sure the procedure now and am a little shaken up so appreciate your help...
I contact the police, report my bag stolen. I contact my landlord (a private family). Contact my insurance.
I live in a block with 6 other families. Do I contact them?
The key opens building door, apartment door, keller, garage
We are unaware of the circumstances of the loss, however, most petty theft is for cash and your bag may be dumped minus any cash. If your address is still in there, there is hope of recovery...
You will need a police report before going to your insurance. Make a note of everything you had in your bag, also keep a record of all the costs, including the cost of the bag. Replacement keys, IDs, driving license can add up to a lot in Switzerland!
Just one thing - if the keys are replaced kindly know that you are only responsible to pay for the remaining life of the keys/locks and not for the full replacement cost
Of those, only the keys are likely covered by an insurance by default (private 3rd party liability).
For your own stuff like the ID, drivers license, the bag, etc to be covered your HausratsVersicherung (household goods insurance) needs to include "einfacher Diebstahl auswärts" (theft out of home, as opposed to robbery or theft in conjunction with a break-in), IME this is an option but not the default.
I would find it nice if a neighbour who lost their key would inform me. Would possibly keep me on the look out for any unknown people who gain entrance into the building.
I found out we have keys that can be individually cancelled - so we don’t necessarily have to replace cylinder. This also means the cancelled key cannot access the building.
I have lived in Switzerland rentals for 25 years and have never been informed by a neighbour of a lost key.
I went in person to my local police station where they took down all my details but didn’t give me a reference number. I’ll see how that works out.
Quick update - locksmith confirmed that if a Kaba house key is handed in somewhere there is a system where police will return to Kaba and Kaba will make sure it finds its way back to the correct management company/household.
Apparently this does happen but to note that house keys often take up to 2 months to surface and he has never heard of any reappear after 2 months.
