Basel C Permit renewal - British Citizen

Dear All,

I have C permit which was issued after 5 years in 2017. I am a British Citizen living in Basel. I have always lived in Basel Kanton without any change for the last 9 years. The current C permit expires July 2022, do I have to have the language requirements for my renewal for July 2022? If any of you can point me in the right direction it would be highly appreciated.

Many Thanks

You can find the information here: https://www.bdm.bs.ch/Wohnen/niederl...illigung-.html

It says you must have B1 (oral) for early granting, or A2 (oral) and A1 (written).

B1 for renewal? I thought C permit needs A1 written and A2 spoken, but I was not sure whether it is for new C permit applications or for renewal. I am not applying for Citizenship, instead renewing C permit.

It seems each place has their own rules.

I posted the same question with regard to Zurich & a very helpful EF member posted a link that stated it was just a straightforward renewal.

From the link above it looks like an automatic downgrade to a B ....

I looked at the BDM website and there is nothing about a language level for C renewal. Am I missing something?

Our experience won't help you, as we got our C due to good language levels at 5 years; we weren't asked for any documents for the renewal, apart from the form and photos.

That page is clearly just linking to the wrong form for third country nationals. The OP will anyway receive the correct form by mail when the permit approaches expiry. Also the OP is British and was here before Brexit, and so they are grandfathered in as equivalent to EU national.

I don't see why language requirements would apply for renewal.

Here's a link to the PDF form for Basel Stadt to renew a C permit. There is no mention of a language requirement. The form says EU but as OP was here pre-Brexit that's how the application would be treated. Odds are this is the form that the OP will receive in the mail for renewal.

PDF is from this page, under Verlàˆngerung der Niederlassungsbewilligung

Perfect! That makes sense. Thanks everyone for the prompt replies.

I would be really glad if no test is needed for the permit C renewal. Reading the above replies got me a little confused

I always thought as a British national you need it during the renewal as the language requirement is only exempt for few EU countries (France, Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal etc.).

Since its Basel related question, would this fall into Cantonal or federal requirement?
