I didn't have a problem renting at all - in fact I had a choice of places when I came! but then I did cheat and use a relocation agent ( http://www.personal-relocation.ch/ ) hopefully that link wont get removed! But if it does, the ladies' name is Ines Hofer - she searched apartments for me, set up appointments, came to view with me, sorted out all the documents I needed, she even helped me move in, sort out my resident permit/changes and my bank accounts. though it might seem like money not well spent I couldn't recommend her enough - its worth the piece of mind to have everything sorted quickly and efficiently. As I recall she herself had previously relocated from Basel to Dubai and then back again, so she understands the stresses of being in a "foreign land"
