Basel with 2 dogs

You know, I don’t know! I should take a look (slaps hand to forehead)

Excellent idea. I see our resident dog expert Meloncollie hasn’t replied yet to this thread so she’s probably on holiday or something.

As you might have noticed a post here the Federal mandatory dog ownership course was abolished, but I think there are still trainers out there who offer it as a voluntary thing and that might be a good place to start once you’ve arrived and got settled in. A bit more on it in this thread.

Also you’ll need to visit a vet within 10 days of arrival so your dogs can be checked over and registered in the AMICUS database so have a look in this thread for vet recommendations in the Basel area.

If you are on Facebook, join the Basel Dogs group.

An 80m terrace is more the exception than the rule !

I agree i have no idea how dogs behave, but the OP implied in her first post the little dog was...boisterous

I'll second that recommendation. Our doggies go there a couple of days a week (they pick up and drop off at our apartment (we gave them a key)) and we also use them for training. The two owners are great, totally focussed on the dogs, and they're qualified trainers. You also get to see pictures of your dogs' day as they post 30-40 photos every day on their Facebook page.

Something to budget for is dog tax. In Basel-Stadt, for your first dog in Basel itself, it's 160 CHF per year (150 in Riehen, 120 in Bettingen), but for each dog after that the cost per dog is doubled (so 320/300/240). So for 2 dogs, we pay 480 CHF per year. (Though it's probably worth it for the free poo bags on every corner around here )

Another good recommendation (though watch out - Kleinbasel is relatively big, and most of it isn't so close to Lange Erlen). There is also "Schorenmatten"/"Schorenweg" area very close.

We live just next to Lange Erlen and the woods and River Wiese (a shallow river with grassed banks) are doggy heaven.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lange_Erlen (German Wikipedia, but it has a few photos)

Oh dear! I can see his tail wagging like crazy in the pic. How adorable are both.

Go for it, you’ll find a suitable place and you’ll love how amazingly friendly and suitable is Switzerland for dogs. Your guys will enjoy just like they did back in LA by having you around, and changing the sand for fresh green leaves, snow and rivers.

Have sent you a PM

Some great insights here.

While I know you are looking for places to stay, Switzerland is like a group of towns which decided to call themselves a country. So many things are still driven by local regulations. Basel is very nice for dogs. What you may want to look for are places which are close to the river or close to the woods so that you can take your dogs for a walk. Also the point around people not being always comfortable with dogs is well made. Dogs I have seen here are exceptionally well behaved and trained (unlike my dog who was a bundle of raw energy). While there are other options like Canton Aargau (Rheinfelden, Moehlin etc.), it is not as easy to just go and stay there. Also note that any apartment/house you search for, you need to ensure they are comfortable allowing pets. Some are ok with small dogs but not big dogs. Additionally the same would need to be declared to the insurance companies as well. And cantons may also have their own rules for dog owners which you need to be aware of and follow. Switzerland is great for dogs and pets but as with all other things here, there is a process and you follow the process. All the best with the move.

What you inferred is not what I meant to imply. By enthusiastic I just meant to describe that my little dog is a puppy...so he is enthusiastic like any puppy might be. Thrilled to pieces about everything and everyone. He's not a yappy, bark at everything just to hear his own voice dog. Thank god!

Thank you for your email! Your advice is VERY well appreciated!! I tried to reply but apparently reached my allowance of private messages :/

I know someone who lives in Riehen, they own their home (duplex), I don’t know what renting is like there but it is a lovely place, quiet and lots of green spaces and easy access countryside, quick commute to Basel city.

In villages, absolutely.

Hi

good neigherhoods in Basel are Iselin and Gotthelf. You are quite near to the Allschwiler Wald as you are not allowed in parks with dogs. There you can go for walks with your dogs.

So great to be able to take our dog to most restaurants and cafés here - in the UK it is a nightmare to find places where you can.
