Just realised our pre-paid Mastercard from BCV is pretty useless when it comes to things like car hire (most firms won't accept it as its not embossed).
Does anyone have any recommendations to a good credit card to get in Switzerland?
We will mainly use for online purchases and car hire.
We have the Migros Cumulus Credit Card, which we use for everything. It's free of charge, although if you don't pay off directly or require paperstatments (download Statement yourself online is free) the fees are higher. And you also collect their Cumulus Points. Happy to send you the link if you want it.
Never had any issues, and they called once whilst we booked internal flights in Africa, just to check if it was us.
Yes, for an average consumer, migros (or I suppose COOP version of it) is one of the best deals out there. They are free and you get cumulus points for your purchase which can add up quite fast. The foreign currency transaction costs on the migros card is not the best compared to some of the mainstream bank cards but unless you spend a large amounts overseas it's not going to be a significant factor.
Another card that I like is the PostFinances Platinum card. It has an annual cost but you can recover via cash back plus it provides useful insurances like covering your rental car insurance deductible and several costs related to unexpected travel cancellations (due to medical emergency or losing your job - but important to read the fine print here).
The above assumes you are disciplined enough to pay back on time as I have no idea about interest rates on these cards for failing to make your payments on time.
Dont know any that are actually free. The UBS card i have is free to have but i pay alot on interest and conversion fees. I think it might have been free interest for the 1st year but after that its quite a bit. There is then a mark up fee of, i think, 1.7% when using it abroad, a terrible conversion if in a foreign currency and now + interest! Sorry im not much help! perhaps this is a good example of a bad card!!
The Coop Supercard is free as long as you pay your bills completely every month and if you manage to switch to online bills, which is not turned on by default. If you pay in installments, or if you have any physical piece of paper sent to you, you have fees.
