Big engine cars

My apologies, I should have been more specific. What type of AMG?

reason for getting a big suv or offroader is because >I drive much to fast with sporty cars. and the tickets are starting to get up there.

been thinking :

1 defender; but as im 2 m tall its not the comfiest of rides....but god do i like the look of them.

2. BMW x5 3.0

3. Range rover; but there rep is not to good

btw these are used im looking at.

Budget is 25k-30k chf.

xcept the defender can be alittle more as it would be new

For that budget, go for the Defender or the X5. Any Range Rover at that price will cost you a LOT in the long run. For a decent Range Rover that won't require a lot of work you are looking at 85K easily.

If you can be bothered to import one from England (really not that much hassle) then this Defender is a bloody good deal:

Or if you want to spend a little more, this is unbelievable value (LR have been clearing their LHD MY2009 stock on the UK)

The defender is interesting....

but the hassle of importing......well going to UK to check it out, paperwork, checkpoints here.....

No, both of those were LHD hence why they are such good deals.

Good luck with your search.

Actually, I've just found your perfect car.

30k CHF including import taxes

sorry changed my post while you were replying.

cause i checked the pics again.

you know the seller? how do you know the price?

This is a terribly ugly car. If you have to go the Chelsea tractor route, do it right...

This one leaves you some thousands for petrol and taxes and since it is from Zug it probably has not been smashed down the Autobahn forever, so the mileage should not be that much of an issue.

I personally would never buy any of those and if: There is only one "Geländewagen"... but they are popular and therefore over the budget...

I feel a "I like my women like I like my car" thread coming on...

The price is in the ad -- click on More details. It works out to less than 27,000 chuffs, and that's before haggling ...

Taking about the G ? my dad has 2 (one old beater one and one newer one) one word....AWeSOME

And we all know that the most important aspect of a fun car is weight distribution

Personally I would never buy the Ford Expedition but given our friend is from the States it would possibly fit his bill.

As for the ML55 they, and all of the 1st generation M-Class, have shocking build quality and it will cost you an absolute fortune over a few years.

Great off roader, fairly awful on. Massively hard ride and not exactly great interior. But then again neither is the Defender but both serve a purpose.

I would check with the Swiss authorities before you start an off-road adventure. They can be a bit stiff about that sort of thing here.

Incredibly stiff to be more accurate.

I have a Defender and apart from banging it over the odd curb or sploshing around in an untypically messy Swiss carpark I have to take it over the border into France or Germany to do anything off road.

I have taken it up a track and into the woods and got told off by the logging guys quite effectively.

To be honest I would even check if you are allowed to off-road on private land. I would imagine there is some rule about it.

i thought the x5 was a girl when it came to proper off roading ? Dressed up road car care really.

Depends what you mean by proper off roading.

Will it rock crawl? No. Can you lock the diffs? No.

Does have sufficent ground clearance to get through reasonable snow drifts, drops etc? Yes and the 4x4 system is ok too.

Thanks - I am genuinely not an expert at off roaders, out of interest can I ask why in that list the RangeRover does "not have good rep" ? I thought the landrover / rangerover range were incomparable in the UK to anything else - i remember clarkson oding a review and saying there wasnt anything to compare them to as they were the only true off roaders around (mass market) in blighty.

Note, im not arguing I am genuinely interested.

I think what the OP meant is that the Land Rover Discovery does not have a good rep, which is very true. Generation 1 and 2 were awful, so much so that Land Rover called the 3rd version the LR3 in the USA to disassociate from the Discovery name. Both the LR3 and LR4 are very good cars and infact the Range Rover Sport is based on the Discovery platform.

As for the Defender, it has its pros and cons. It is hand assembled which means fitting/changes parts is so easy. The negative is the build quality can sometimes be rubbish. However, if you are in the middle of the desert and need to change something, it is easy on the Defender.

And then we have the Range Rover, which I will confess I own. Bloody amazing and apparently very good off road (I've driven mine through very thick snow and up mountains but nothing really that hard). Whilst I love the RR (I have the Full Fat version), the build quality is not as good as my last car, a 5 series BMW.
