Built-in Cameras on a Tesla Vehicle

The latest software update allows sentry mode without audible alarm, just a message to the app and video recording...

But you always have something to hide.

Remember last time you went over a traffic light that had just turned bright red after being a bit too long in dark orange?

Or when you went 35 in a 30 zone?

Or the time you turned the air around you blue over that asshat who cut you off? Or when you cut somebody off?

I ́ll take a wager that most of us have driven in a way we would like to hide if we had known about it:

Out of the remit. Not applicable. Unless the driver causes a less-protected road user to swerve, or fall off or is hit) because of his actions.

I'm pretty sure that bike cams do not have radar speed measuring inbuilt.

For me, a car forcing a bike off the road is a little bit more serious as far as safety is concerned than a bit of swearing.

I'll wager that too. The camera footage is used to prosecute dangerous driving which is actually affecting other less protected road users at the time of recording and nothing else.

Just musing along to the tune of my inner drumbeat…
But a fact is we all do things that we shouldn ́t, even cyclists, even pedestrians. Ever walked over a crossing when there are no cars a-coming but the little man was red?

The question is: “Do we really want our cars to record these things?” There was a discussion a while back on wether cars should have a black box recording everything the car is doing, the insurance companies were pushing for it, the authorities wanted it and lawyers were having the time of their lives trying to get such gained data admissible in court.
It never happened, mainly due to strict the data protection laws in the EU.
As for Tesla, the jury is still out if these cars actually constitute a breach of privacy laws and if they should be allowed to be sold in the EU.
The European court of justice recently blocked “safe harbor” and the update “data shield” which rules the transfer of personal data to unsafe countries like the US.
Indeed China has forbidden their functionaries to drive Teslas due to the fact that they record and when a country like China calls foul over data protection…!

Do other e-autos record, either automatically while driving or purposefully while in parked 'sentry' mode similar to Teslas, or is this unique to the brand?

I don't know about cars. I think in the not too distant future, cars will become so automated they will virtually be accident proof.

You quoted my post about uploading cycle-cam video and so I replied to that.

I think you misunderstand me.

The Police in the UK are prosecuting drivers for dangerous and reckless driving that has affected others. For lack of consideration to less-protected road users.

Your example hardly qualifies for that, does it?

I think that the way to look at this is to recognize that all cars that receive software updates have the potential to record your data and transmit it to the manufactures cloud servers.

in the end I think it is best if you look at your car the same way you regard your smartphone and understand both cellphone and car have the capability and are constantly transmitting similar or even the same data to any third party who is interested in buying such data.

You can by now get apps for your car just like you can for your phone but remember; if any software is free then you are the product.

Then I misunderstood you, je suis désolée.

Slammer, I always thought you were male!

You never can tell on the internet.

"Always" after 3 posts?!? Welcome back...

I believe it is unique to Tesla as it is required for their full self-driving system...

Did I do a linguistic boo boo?

Masculine form of the adjective: Je suis désolé

Feminine form of the adjective: Je suis désolée

If you used an online translator and the feminine form of the adjective was the output, you're welcome to keep worrying about big companies and your data.

Now I know why I am suddenly getting placed adverts for female hygiene products.

In this case the car is the product. I seriously doubt Tesla is selling data to any third party.

Without having looked into it. I would be 99% sure they'd sell data once they take your name and CC details out.

There are similar features in a few other brands/vehicles, if they work exactly how Tesla's Sentry does, is not something I can answer.

My Mercedes has a bunch of cameras for a full surround view and an Augmented Reality guidance system via GPS as well, but I don't have a Sentry-like capability that I know of.

It activates the camera (I can see it in dash) in some situations such as when approaching red lights at a complex intersection. Makes me think it does this to survey the surroundings and activate self-protective measures in case I don't slow down quick enough or there's another danger lurking. I guess this could lead to the car having a recording capability if the manufacturer truly wanted to add/activate one in a future release...

I would not put it past them, but unless you carefully read the license agreement, you know, the one that nobody ever does, you will not know. I can also imagine third party software for you car as a subscription, just like a lot of software is these days, or software where you have to buy additional plugins to make it useful.

I wonder what would happen to your cars... say, for want of an item, navigation software if the subscription runs out?

Or could your car be disabled if the insurance goes up and you havn ́t paid, or could the police stop your car at their leisure?

Whatever the future will bring, cars as we have known them for the last hundred and thirty six years know will cease to exist and in a few years time we will only see so-called "smart cars" on the road.

I wonder we will see a resurgence in the value of dumb cars? Already you cant get my first car, a Ford Capri, for under 20 grand.

I suspect that slammer and many others know me from about 13 years ago. Don't worry, nothing untoward is going on, this isn't a dupe account; just a replacemengt. And it won't be here long, as I'm just Here for the money, and now that I've received it (details in another thread), I've asked for deletion. That should free up some time for me to visit the Tesla service centre for the umpteenth (OK, fourth) replacement (in less than three years) of my standard charging cable.

Aww! Come on, you can’t leave now. Things are gettin interesting.
