Buying books online?!

Well, they don't have many english books in theis shops, but you can order online . No strings attached, you don't have to give your credit card number, for you can pay afterwards with a post-cheque!

I don't know what kind of books we are talking about, but I had no trouble getting some literature ones.

Just wanted to give an update . . . found the book I was looking for, french edition of Life of Pi, on Amazon.de. Had a laugh trying to sort out the website, bought it three days ago, it arrived today in perfect condition, for the low low price of about 7 euro shipping included. Thanks everyone!

Have you tried wellread.ch?

If you are looking for French books you could also look at France Loisirs in Switzerland (. They are a book club. You have to buy 4 books per year and there is a membership fee (see site for details). They don't have all books but a good selection. Prices are less than the prices you will find in Payot and FNAC.

If you like police/mystery novels I can highly recommend the MILLÉNIUM series Tomes 1,2,3 (in French). Once you start reading you can't put them down. It is by a Swedish author, Stieg Larsson . Translated into French and I think in German but only Tome 1 is available in English for the moment. Dont't buy it in English as you need the three books to get the full story.

Then there is Migros on-line book shop called Ex-Libris.

You might also want to have a look at the book section of www.toppreise.ch They have a book comparison service. I have not used it so you will have to see how it works, who the suppliers are etc..

For reference, Histoire de Pi (paperback) costs CHF 15,90 from ex-libris.

Here are the search results from toppreise. You need to look at the price of the book and the cost of shipping (if any) to get the total price.

Shipping from Amazon.com is quite affordable.....It costs $3.99 for an international shipment plus $3.99 per item. It really pays off if you are ordering several books. I just had them send over and shipping was about 32 dollars for 9 books in 3 packages! (and not a rappen paid for import tax)

you could also use http://www.bookfinder.com/

it will search and compare the prices of the books from various sites.

Amazon is good for English books. I never had problems before, but whenever I wanted to find a French book, or an Italian one, choice was very very narrow. So I found Tuklu , which has a special section of its site dedicated to books and it's available in France and Italy too.

www.books.ch

Both carry large amount of English books and quite fast delivery.

someone said play.com..well I stoped ordering from them, books arrive so late, one was lost on the way, there is no way or so hard to contact them, i rather pay a bit more and order from amazon.de or book depos

You can always check addall.com for a particular book, and see who's got it at the lowest price.

Lots of the amazon.com vendors will not ship outside the US, so while the $3.99 price is appealing, it doesn't always work. I'm also a big fan of bookdepository.co.uk

I generally use http://www.bookbutler.ch to see what the prices including delivery charges are, but almost invariably end up buying the books at http://www.bookdepository.co.uk .

Just remember not to buy too many books (or DVDs or Blurays) at one time since you might trigger import duties if the combined shipment has a value exceeding

Currently you will be able to buy books up to a value of CHF 208 (if the reduced rate of 2.4% applies) and other products up to a value of CHF 65 (if the normal rate of 7.6% applies).

Hi, I use Amazon.co.uk (uk side) postage is not so expensive, around £3.00.

ExLibris is really great! I ́ve already gotten a few books from them online, no problem whatsoever.

They have a great choice as well, and prices are reasonable.

In my markliste there is at least 30 books which I would love to have, so one month at a time I pick one and indulge myself

Shipping is fast and sometimes the book arrives even before the stated date. No fee either (for the postage), you only pay full price for the book.

Usually I buy from amazon.co.uk marketplace (just click the New & used link). Delivery cost are low

Amazon.de deliveries for free to Switzerland but less english books available there than .co.uk

if it is helping, I go to Paris once a month.

Also it would be possible to star a permanent thread (or 2) for swaping/selling/offering french/english book.

We all have books we do not need to keep.

Hi, I just ordered two books aroumd 25francs for both on book depository. I live in Thurgau. Should I be afraid of paying customs?

NO! Books actually have a lower VAT than other products (2.5% vs 7.7%) so you would have to purchase (with shipping - which is free with BD in the UK) over CHF 200.- before you will have any issue with VAT/customs.

With regular products the new break-even (with the 7.7% VAT is CHF 64.93

- product plus shipping).

Have ordered English books from both of the above.
