Buying english books online

Thanks -- a good find that I'll use.

Obviously you need to know what you're looking for though. One of the pleasures of Amazon is just typing in a name or a subject, getting a mass of titles you never knew existed and skimming through the "Look Inside" previews and the reviews etc.

You sure? Everything I have ever bought(including books) from amazon de has been free delivery to Switzerland.

To be honest, no, I'm not sure. It's a while since I ordered a physical book through amazon.de and it's just possible that postage was free -- but it took about a week to arrive which made/makes me think it didn't come from Germany.

I'm surprised that shipping rates are higher, but this makes sense if they are ordering from Britain. Are the Swiss on-line bookstores cheaper than Amazon once you factor in shipping?

Book Depository offers FREE shipping to anywhere in the world. The price you see (you can show it in £ or €) is what you pay.

Why complicate your life with an Amazon or CH website that is not in English?

Another vote for Amazon...outlined below

My library didn't have a place to bring back books outside of opening hours until just last year. You could only return DVDs to an outdoor box outside of opening hours. It was weird. And their English section is VERY limited - but this is the Rappi-Jona library. I would guess Zurich ones are better.

I have also never had this - shipping costs on books from the UK but not Germany. (Unless you are not buying from Amazon directly but rather from a marketplace seller - then many of those won't ship to CH).

But this price has always been higher than the cost from Amazon with free shipping. The shipping isn't really "free" - just hidden in the cost. Nice marketing line, though. I don't have problems with German language, though, so I guess that could be a barrier for some. I do wish they would have their site in English - would make it easier for relatives to buy stuff for me

On Amazon.de you get free shipping on books, plus many of them are 20% off (might not be for English books, this might only be for German language books). I will shop between the 2 amazon sites and pick the cheaper option. I have tried to shop locally - besides the high prices, I happened to try and go on a Monday - not good, it was closed. After being here almost 4 years, "regular" shops being closed on a Monday still gets me!

^^^^this.

I shop between the book depository, Amazon UK and Amazon de and consistently find that Amazon UK works out cheaper even with the added cost if shipping.

The English language books on amazon de are more expensive than the same books on the UK site and the same with the book depository so the shipping costs are obviously built into the prices.

I occasionally order from the book depository but the majority of my books come from Amazon UK.
