I've searched and still not sure so hopefully someone can give a quick rundown of the process.
I have never owned a vehicle in Switzerland, but ofc have my Swiss driving license including unrestricted motos. I'm used to the UK system, where plates stay with vehicle, not the driver/rider.
So a bit confused about what to do, if I intended to go and look at a 2nd hand bike that's located 2hrs away on the train, buy it, and ride it home?
I need to somehow get the bike registered, insured and get the plates before I even go and take a look at it?
Judging the condition from the photos in the ad, I'm around 75% I will would buy it. I would love to avoid 2 journeys. But maybe it's better to go and view it, decide and commit to buying, and then return after organising everything and getting the plates?

It's the same as with a car (numeros threads about purchasing a car)
The old owner lets you drive home on their plates, you return them per mail. You bring the motorcycle home on a trailer/van. You take gray card. Insure it on your name, get plates, drive it home on your plates. Get a copy of the gray card in advance and organize day plates. (Only do this if you know you will buy it). If you have already a motorcycle, use its plates and the process of "Vorläufige Verkehrsberechtigung" / "Autorisation provisoire de circuler".

When I bought my (used) moto, I sent the money to the onwer and he sent me the carte gris of the moto by post. Then with that, I started an insurance and took the new plates.
Went to the location (canton Vaud from canton Zurich), put the new plates and took the moto.
