Children related deductions

Hello!

We are an unmarried couple with a child and joint custody. I have few questions related to children related deductions in the tax return:

Since we will have to file two separate tax returns, can we simply split 50-50 the child related costs (e.g. health insurance premium and childcare)? I've checked the online demo on the ZH services website, but could't find where to specify the cost for childcare. Under which section shall I specify childcare cost? Which document shall we provide to support the childcare costs? We do not have any invoice nor statement from the kita, only the contract. Would that be sufficient?

Many thanks!

1. Unmarried couples who live together, file separately and share responsibility for the child/ children can generally each take 50% of child-related deductions on their respective individual tax filings. More information is at this link (German):

2. It is possible to input directly into the tax forms in ZHPrivate Tax. Just go to 16.6 to input childcare costs.

3. Your tax submission will require a Zahlungsnachweis (proof of payment) for childcare expenses. Why not contact the Kita to request a receipt for childcare expenses paid in 2021?

Same advice as above - your Kita will provide a suitable receipt for tax puposes.

Thanks for your replies.

1. On the ZH private tax demo I see there is "Gemeinsames Kind" box: I guess I need to tick that and the CHF 6500 child deduction will be automatically halved?

2. On the ZH private tax demo I cannot find section 16.6, in fact I cannot find any numbered section at all. I guess the demo is a simplified version of the tax return form?

Many thanks!

You may also add a note with your tax return (it asks you before submitting if doing online) in order to avoid any possible confusion.
