Choosing an HDTV

Hey Higgy wow that is weird... judging from that rating for each segment it should have been a minimum 4/5. Odd...

Do you have any Which? results for the LG 47SL9000? Currently it is going for a song (well, CHF 1765 on toppreise.ch).

I was idly browsing in Interdiscount and say the LED TV's and the picture was gorgeous. The price less so. I might hang on a bit and wait for these to come down.

That's where I saw a LG 47SL9000. I fell in love. I took pictures of it and everything.

I sent you a PM, the 42" version did very well but that model wasn't on review. Other LG 47"ers not so well scoring. I guess it depends who they buy their screens from. I think there are only two LCD screen manufacturers left since Toshiba or whoever it was pulled out.

Cheers,

HB

What are the ups and downs with LED? Why's it so much better? I just saw a colour ratio of 4000:1 on toppreis.

The LG 47SL9000 has a quoted contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1. God alone knows what that means. But it supports many different digital media formats and has a USB port.

Thanks for the info'!

The 42" is quite a bit cheaper too. I will compare the "bits at the back" with the 47 incher's.

Sony is introducnig new models in 2010, inc. 3D ones:

I've got my eye on this one Samsung UE40B6000 . Should I should I? My original budget was 700 fr :-/

Bought a Samsung PS50q97HD a few years ago.

No complaints. Bought it for size/price and styling (minimalist surround). Panasonics and Sonys looked fugly at the time, though this may have changed. Sound not an issue becuase I use a Denon/Jamo big box home theatre set up. I would never use TV speakers.

Minor niggle is that ball sometimes "dithers" when passing over crowd, but you wouldn't notice it if you didn't know it was there. This has probably improved with later models.

Showroom comparisons are usuallyirrelevant because the displays are set to be too bright/vivid.

149" OLED - Go big or go home :P

Wifi dongle no longer available

My point of view:

Whatever you buy will be out of date within one year and you will probably be thinking of changing at three years.

There is no point in paying mega bucks for all those different features.

At the end of the day, if you don't want to kidd yourself, most of your time will probably be just turning it on, watching the news and watching a films on DVD.

LED is too expensive compared to LED at the moment but will obviously come down.

Plasma have more problems than LCD

Most LCD screen come from 4 manufacturers of screens.

The important parts of the TV are the processors and the software that fills the pixels.

I understand that Sony have the best software.

I would buy a 40" to 50" Sony LCD

Well...I went for the Samsung PS50B650. So far, the picture is great...especially the HD channels. Having some trouble getting DLNA set up and my wireless network. But hope to solve it over the weekend.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice.

I bought a Samsung 32 inch LED TV last weekend. Can't remember the model number sorry. The picture is brilliant, and the TV is light and has a low footprint. However its sound is tinny and metallic, so I'll have to use external speakers. I reckon my telephone probably has better sound reproduction...

I've heard stories that this is a general problem with thin TVs though - there's not enough space to install decent sized speakers.

Samsung are known for appalling sound quality... but its always best to buy a 5.1 system anyway. I have a Pioneer VSX-LX70 and Quad L-ite 5.1 system and it's just about better than being in a cinema.

yep the sound on our samsung led is pretty poor, not helped by the speakers being on the back and facing the wrong way

which means at some point I'll have to buy an amp and some speakers (my old surround sound system won't work with it) which means more wires, and I hate wires.
