Community knit project #3 - Blankie for DB and MN

I've read this thread and I'm no closer to knowing what you're all up to.

Cake? Trollied on gin? Magic Roundabout special mushrooms?

Definitely not keeping up in the back here.

Perfect, thank you sooo much.

You need to read the original Pokemon blanket thread to know what this one is about.

I did. And I didn't understand that one half the time either.

For those of you at the back:

Anyone who would like to knit or crochet 10cm squares so we can make a group baby blanket for Mathnut and Mr Breakfast is most welcome to do so. I think we are going for bright jewel colours for this one. Any yarn used should please be machine washable.

Edit: please also send some spare yarn with your squares , sew in any tail ends and, if they need it, please block.

Then we send them to BelgianMum and, because she is a star, she makes them up into a blanket and will then forward the finished blanket to where it needs to go.

Simples.

Thank you!

Edited again: blocking is not necessary, nor is extra yarn for sewing, but PLEASE sew all tail ends in so BM doesn't have to. Thank you.

Now it's simples! Thank you. Any specific wool weight?

Um... don't think so. I've been using DK but whatever you have.

I forgot something ... will edit my previous post too: please put some of the yarn in with the finished squares to aid sewing up and please sew all tails in. If you're up to blocking (I didn't last time, I hold my hand up) I think BM would appreciate it.

We are giving BM an Easter break though and not sending squares to her again so soon, I am guessing.. will do my knitting over Easter holidays

Should we aim for the end of April? Or later?

I too used DK last time, and cotton wool.

If my sievy brain serves me right I think MathNut wrote something about due date in July.

Considering BM's surgery and recovery time it would be OK to start sending squares in May or early June even. What do you think about that, BM??

May/ June sounds good if that's OK with everyone else? I'm buried under two wedding presents and a birthday request until the end of April. And I may just have started a new project for Little Rufus ...

I did pick up some lovely soft DK in jade, deep purple and kind of a dark fuschia.

Timing is perfect for me too. Will begin a couple of squares over Easter and continue into the merry month of May.

I won't be able to do any sewing up before mid may so May/June time would be perfect. The baby is due in July so I would aim to have it finished by the end of a June and post it or deliver it in early July before I toddle off on holiday.

DK is ideal weight I think.

I feel I should admit that I haven't used any of the spare yarn you all sent with your squares. I made a unilateral executive decision and used the same pale grey wool to sew them all together. It would have been way too complicated to match up the wool with the squares since the colours are all randomly mixed up

I'm all for unilateral decisions... after all, you're the one doing all the sewing together!!!

Will aim to get my contribution ready to send for late May then, that gives me time to finish a few other commitments (mostly self-imposed), and also fit in a flying visit to see OH in Denmark (where I've found an incredible source of the most beautiful [and cheap] wool/silk and wool/cotton mix yarn. Shame it's not machine washable.

Hope the shoulder op goes well, don't rush the MN/DB blanket and damage yourself; if necessary I'm more than willing to take over.

Block the squares ... by steam? Don't have a blocking mat ...

Pin knitting/crochet to size and face down on your ironing board (or a thick pile of newspaper, putting a bit of kitchen paper between paper and work), place a damp tea towel or similar over and 'iron'. Basically give a short burst of steam without having any contact (or applying pressure) between the iron and the cloth. Let work dry and then un-pin.

Blocking mats aren't really necessary unless you do a lot of knitting... I mainly use a couple of cheap foam camping mats left over from when my sons were in the scouts.

Oh thanks about that, I was wondering about that blocking thing too, never heard of it nor practised it ( and I used to knit a lot when younger)

We didn't get round to shop for the yarn yesterday, my friend had a sudden other commitment. But I have spotted a kind of yarn I want to use......... quite neutral in its main colour but RAINBOW speckled, suits me to a T.....the Pagan Hippie chick

Or do you, the knittereresses professionelles think this would look too 'busy' amongst monocoloured squares?

Ladies, whichever of you in the other thread came up with the idea of making another blankie, has my eternal thanks! I feel so much better having something other to do when having to sit on my backsie with leg up on doctors orders.

X

My squares last time were all multicolored. And they were fine. Rainbow sounds totally groovy, esp for a pagan hippie.

I have loads of baby weight though, so should i do a tight stich (was thinking of tunisian) or crochet with two strands. Hmmmmm.

Rainbow sounds fab.

Edot, what's Tunisian please?

Tunisian is also called afghan stitch. It makes a tight stitch, sort of like knitting. You have to use a hook long enough to keep the stitches on the hook.

Oooh, thanks. I have a very long monster hook and wonderEd what to use it for!

No sniggering at the back ...

I wonder what MathNut and DB think..... interestingly enough the two most important people in regards to this project, haven't yet piped up....
