Contract position in Tessin

Hi,

i would like to have your point of view on an offer that i have recently received.

1 year contract in Tessin, for a big bank with a 825 chf gross daily rate and high chances of internalization (of course that's what the head hunter mentioned).

Currently i hold a B permit, expiring next year, and i work/live in Zürich with a permanent position as an intern (no consulting).

Would you take this? How do you see it?

Hi,

yes, I'd definitely go for it particularly when you say you're currently working as an intern.

The rate seems competitive for Ticino but it's difficult to guess without knowing your background.

You can always ask the recruiting company to give you a payslip simulation.

I think there were some members working at CS in Ticino and they could give you better advice.

sorry i wrote badly before....what i meant with "intern" is that, i'm hired directly as permanent by the company i'm working in.

Done already the payslip simulation.....is definetely higher that my current salary in zurich. That is not bad, but not extremely high either, in terms of salary.

What scares me is the possibility of not continuing and then need to find again a position....and if it is close to the permit renovation that could be a problem

How many years work experience do you have? You mention being an intern so I would imagine not too much - if this is the case then this is a good rate - of course you leave the "permanent" role but reality is in CH very few jobs are permanent and this is a one year contract so I can imagine if you do well, then there would be opportunity to extend. Do you like the idea of moving to Ticino?

Hi , sorry i meant differently.

I have an internal role in my company. I have 7+ years experience overall....little bit less than 5 in CH.

Tessin would be easier for me definetely...i'm italian therefore the language favors me. And i already lived there for few years, so...

Got it. Still think it's a good offer! Life in Tessin is cheaper than Zurich and I would go there in a heartbeat if I could get a job there.

But anyway, the Tessin is nice and is less "hectic" than the North of Switzerland. If you have a decent offer, I would certainly consider it. It will also be a lot easier (and cheaper) to find a nice apartment here than in Zurich.

thanks for the message. Yes, i worked before in Tessin and i can confirm these data, due to salary dumping probably..... Still, this offer is higher than the salary that i have here in zurich...that i would say is average.

1 year contract does not mean anything really. Companies look at contractors as disposable material. You can be let go with 3 days notice. Similar with being internalised. Might happen, might not. Noone owes you anything.

CHF 825 is a typical contracting rate these days though I would personally not contract for this amount of money (unless I was unemployed). Does not pay off IMHO if you count all the risks associated with the contracting. I’d say 1k+ daily rate is where it starts to make sense contracting but I rarely see this amount of dayrate these days.

Well , what you say is exactly my worrying point as i do not have insurances of internalization and , based on my current situation, represent a big risk.....considering also that my permit expires around the contract termination.

Plus i see recently that is difficult to find a good position...

I have more than 15 years of experience in IT. 6.5 years in the CH. Have done contracting for more than 4 years in the CH and I would say 825 CHF a day is a very good rate for Ticino. Since last 2 years I rarely get calls from Agencies who are ready to offer 800+. That too for Zurich based jobs.

Of course I get tons of calls for CS and JB banks for roles that offer 850-900 chf, but most of the time you get filtered out in the interview process. IMO their interview process is a bit flawed - usually contractors from "American" (originally Indian) companies are in the interview process who try to filter you out, so that they could extend their own contract or hire someone from their agencies.

But in your case since you speak Italian as your first language, maybe they want to post you in team full of Italians or you'll be reporting to some Italian manager. And hence they're offering good rates. If the contract is for 1 year, then just take it. They will surely extend it by one more year and then they'll internalize you.

That is because invariably you end up being hired by the bank's outsourcer not by the bank itself. And the main reason the outsourcer is recruiting locally is because they will not get more permits for third country nationals or they need to plug a gap quickly.

When I came here in 2007 and working for a bank I was on 1200 CHF a day and since then the rates have come down.

I took a permanent job after 5 years in theory less money but the promise of a job until retirement as long as you did a good job and so I could see my children each day. That turned out false as even though they are the largest family owned company in the world they started chasing profits. After 8 years I found myself unemployed.

I have 30 years experience and am God like at what I do and do not get much more than you are being offered but I am grateful for the work and even the rate I get.

In my case I am able to work a bit of overtime which is paid and that makes a world of difference to me!

It's each and everyone's own circumstances so it's a personal decision. For me my eldest son is living with me is moving out to student accommodation and I intend to move to Lugano later this year as there is WFH and two days a month in the office. (train connection from Lugano to Zurich is good)

I am on a contract too and it may not get renewed, then again it might, life is ever changing and you never know at times what is going to happen.

At almost 61 I fear less about changes in life and taking chances after a sh!tty ten years of divorce I can tell you that will put more of a dent in your life finances than any low contracting rate (if you consider it low that is)

By the way I have worked almost 46 years, no university and only 4 years until retirement and then I am beyond grateful to have work. Yes it is time for money but it gives me a chance to put my life back together and the possibility for a better life after 65.

I see so many people afraid to take risks, wanting certainty, well the only certainty in life is change, taxes and death. I speak zero Italian but that does not stop me, I can learn and willing to pay the price, the struggle to live somewhere I consider much better than Canton Geneva.
