Thank you so much, VFR. What I hear you say is that your US DL is still valid in the US, just not in CH. When the DMV here said she was going to keep my DL and make it invalid, I was afraid they would punch some hole in my DL, rendering it useless in the States as well.
I'm glad to hear you're going back so often. The US is still my headquarters too, banks, physical and billing address, health insurance, and everything else. Still trying to figure out how to line up my ducks correctly here given that I'm only here temporarily. Your response really helps. Thank you!
PS: I don't remember a box for "big motorcycles." But I'm assuming that would be class A, correct?
I probably should have prefaced with the usual, "your canton's form and procedure may be different."
And yes, Class A sounds right.
Here is another hint to cover all the bases:
Tell your state you lost your license and ask for a replacement. When you get it, hand your original one in to CH. CH won't know you have a duplicate. So even if they do alter/destroy it (or hold it until you leave), you still have your valid replacement when you go back stateside.
TBH, I wasn't sure when/ (if) I would get mine back, so this is what I did. Probably overkill, but it worked.
I just received swiss license and they put a "not valid in switzerland" sticker on the back. Still used in USA. Kept swiss license for use in Ch. Easy. They don't keep the license if that is your concern.
