It all depends how they are slaughtered. I would imagine that an animal taken to someone's house and then slaughtered without being stunned first by someone who isn't trained would be under a great amount of stress.
Slitting an animals throat and letting it bleed to death is classified as animal cruelty here, yes. What you witnessed as a kid wherever you're from is wholly irrelevant.
Well no one said it was illegal. They are saying the Halall and Kosher methods maybe. Certainly slitting the throat of a goat for public amusement, regardless of how meaningful for your event you think it is, isn't legal in most modern/civilized countries. If you think that's not animal cruelty, I have to wonder you DO think animal cruelty is?
And it's why a lot of slaughter houses who do it in a "humane" way, because stress, as you mentioned gives the animal stress. It tightens it's muscles, and makes for a poorer quality meat when eaten. Also it often deficates and it makes for a lovely potential for E.coli contamination.
You see - it is not the act of slaughtering that is illegal in Switzerland - but the way an animal has to be killed.
Correct me if I am wrong but Halal means that you slit open the throat and let the animal slowly bleed to death. This process is considered unnecessary cruel and therefore illegal. In Europe do cows get killed with a shot in the head or an electric shock in order to kill them as fast as possible and not make them suffer.
The principle is really simple: Everyone has the freedom to do what they want till the moment their actions invade someone else's freedom. Animals have a limited set of this, but still a lot of rights. The right to not have to suffer is therefore considered higher than anyones religious freedom - as it is purely your tradition and no other need to invade the animals freedom in this particularly cruel way.
you can bring the whole cow in, no problem at all but you need to tell the customs guy so he can put a little stamp on the meat so its all legal and approved here.
@Confloozed- Do you really think OP is bothered with animal stress and poorer quality meat for the intention is just to carry sacrificing an animal in their religious way.
To OP you need to understand you are not in your own country and need to respect the customs, rules and regulations of your host country and abide by them. Animal sacrificing is not allowed here in this part of world. Period.
Also dont be surprised if someone sees you or your friends sacrificing animal in house and don't report to police.
So no one will notice you casually walking a cow into your garage? no one will hear the cow screaming as you slit its throat, no one will notice the vast amounts of blood? etc etc and of course whoever you buy the cow from won't ask any questions, fill out any forms etc livestock is tightly controlled, you can't just make a cow disappear without anyone asking questions
This is not as difficult as you may imagine, a bit of careful planning is all that's needed.
Once the cow is out of the back of your Volvo, get it indoors quick before someone spots it.
Then, what you need to do is coax the cow upstairs into the bathroom, make it stand in the bath (suggestion, put some hay in the bath), then, when it's not looking, surprise it with your bread knife, when it's mortally wounded and has stopped thrashing around and mooing, just hang it up by the tail from the shower curtain rod.
This way all the blood drains into the bath, and there's no mess.
Well I don't know about vast amounts of blood. Normally there is a receptical to catch it, as it makes for a wonderful addition to sauces and some sausages. I would hate to waste the blood. I agree with everything else though.
Yes, I'm sure you can't legally slit a terrified cow's throat in someone's backyard surrounded by a bunch of hooting and hollering jerks. You could, of course, do it illegally in which case I would suggest doing it inside your apartment so no one sees.
