Cost of Stitches in Lausanne/Switzerland?

I recently got into an accident in a sport and had to get 6 stitches on my lip (went to the Emergency Room on my own, then a nurse + 2 specialists helped me out). I didn't have insurance yet -- I would like to know how much would the entire procedure cost ? The hospital said I'll get the bill in some time. I'm just worried it doesn't cost too much

Thanks.

The cost will be a few hundred francs. However, since you legally must have insurance in Switzerland, when you do get it, it will be backdated, so you are covered.

Are you employed? If so, depending on how many hours you work, you will be covered by their insurer for accidents.

I'm not sure, perhaps some else knows, but accidents don't have an excess, even if you're paying the premium yourself?

Is accident insurance backdated if with health insurance provider?

I am just a visiting student here for 6 months, I have an international insurance which was approved by the Assurance office in Lausanne, but it's not in their system so I will have to pay upfront, and then send them a claim myself.

I am glad and hope it's only a few hundred francs, otherwise as a student it's a bit difficult to gather the money.

Also -- do hospitals ask for a deposit generally? I was asked to submit 500 CHF even before the treatment.

It's mandatory, so yes.

For non-residents, yes. When my daughter was taken to hospital from the ski-slopes (she's fine, btw), they heard us speaking English and asked us for a credit card. I handed over her health insurance card instead. Of course, in an emergency, they'll treat you even if you haven't got the money.

No excess if employer insurance, normall excess if through your health insurance.

Is accident insurance mandatory?

it’s an option on the health insurance but is that just because you don’t need it if you have employer based accident insurance?

Yes. You are covered by your compulsory health insurance if not by anything else.

Of course then you pay the franchise excess and god-knows what else.

If you work less than eight hours per week then your work insurance will not cover you for non-work accidents such as accidents when travelling to work, or skiing, for example.

The problem comes when it's not an "emergency" but could become one if not treated urgently.

Sometimes, as a tourist, they'll insist on a credit card even if you have travel insurance.

Yes and yes.

No.

While employers have to insure their employees with enough workhours, everybody else needs a different non-mandatory solution. I guess the option via mandatory health insurance is the most common one, but franchise and deductible apply in these cases so it’s less good than the one via employer.
