I can't stomach this kind of tripe...
It is wise to carry along some intruments to a trip: swissknife, water, flashlight, etc... and a puli.
Our group was threatened by a bull (leading a whole cattle) on a field. He was extremely serious until the puli stepped on the stage.
It's a good job he has his mouth open. Otherwise he'd just be an odd looking mop.
I've had the odd run in with cows. Sometimes you can't avoid hiking or running past them as they do tend to stick to the marked Alpine trails for some strange reason. Only had to run away twice when the whole herd started charging me. I've heard that smacking them on the nose turns them away, but I've never tried that line of self defense, yet. Common sense is advised, just give them some space and plan your escape route in advance, I haven't seen any climb trees or jump over fences so far.
Smacking about 30 cows charging at full pelt for you is no easy feat
