Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

I emailed dart tag as you cannot register for one of these outside UK and they sent me this

You will need to pay via the DartCharge Website, we may add other countries in the future but for now try :

I tried it out . You can pay up to a year in advance with a credit card and pay up to midnight on the day you cross on this site. ( eg for hire cars which you do not know the registration )

Go to one of the many Payzone places I guess.

Or if you’ve got a laptop/tablet/mobile with you set up an account and pay it that way. As you can set up an account before you plan to travel and pay into it, there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t be good to go before you even leave Switzerland.

OK, I'm going to ask this again. I have no online account and wouldn't start one, no pay phone, no laptop, etc., I have one debit card which I use once in a blue moon, a Post Finance account and cash. Nor have I a GPS in my car to help me find a pay 'spot' - allI want to do is get to my brother's place. So, they need to leave at least one barrier in place for those of us who want to pay cash. I can imagine this happening actually. There are still many of us who want to get through life without having chips in our veins.

So you have no computer/laptop (how do you get on the forum then? ), no phone of any kind? In that case I suggest you aim to do the crossing beween 10pm and 6am when it’s still free. Or do it by post:

by post (in advance only): Dart Charge Customer Services PO Box 842 Leeds LS1 9QF

You can write a letter and sign a cheque, yes?

Do the wise thing and avoid Essex - it may be longer, but the countryside and people are nicer.

Cheques? You can't be serious. Yes, of course I have a computer (but no laptop) and have no intention of starting any online account. If I want to buy a book for instance I go to my local bookshop and get them to order it for me. I then pay cash. My phone is from Migros and used only for emergencies and the occassional text message. It can't do anything else.

There are still millions like me.

Yes, I know, I’m one of them. No phone apart from the landline one, but I do order things like books online. And yes, I still write cheques to pay bills in the UK - though it takes so long for the bills to arrive with me I find myself being pushed to go paperless and pay online to avoid incurring late payment fees.

Did it, took me exactly 3 mins (including trying to find my credit card)

How did you manage to do only £5?

“You must start a standard account with £10. If you close your account, any remaining balance will be refunded.”

There is an option for a one-off payment.

does anyone know if they are front or rear facing camera's? (or both)

“You must pay by midnight on the day after you cross.” Does that mean the day you cross or midnight of the day after?

And perhaps because some of us actually want/need to go to Essex. It costs a lot more than the crossing fee to go the long way around.

Is throwing 60p in a bucket, still an option?

Sorry, that’s what they put up on the website.

Was throwing 60 p in a bucket ever an option?

It was always £1 when we used it. ( I know it's increased to 2 now)

Fixed

I don’t plan to. I’ll set up an account when we next decide we want to go over and pay that way.

Actually £2.50 as of 30th November 2014.

According to Wiki, it went up to 60p for cars in '84 - I was regularly using it a few years later ('88 if I recall) - and there was a big fibre glass funnelled bin, that you could toss the money in without stopping and arrive at the barrier as it started to rise ...... but if you missed the bucket, you were fracked .

Yes, those were still in use up until they changed the payment system to remove the barriers. Except you needed to throw in your £2 coin instead.

Can't believe how short-sighted it is of them not to take credit cards.
