I tried it out . You can pay up to a year in advance with a credit card and pay up to midnight on the day you cross on this site. ( eg for hire cars which you do not know the registration )
Or if you’ve got a laptop/tablet/mobile with you set up an account and pay it that way. As you can set up an account before you plan to travel and pay into it, there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t be good to go before you even leave Switzerland.
OK, I'm going to ask this again. I have no online account and wouldn't start one, no pay phone, no laptop, etc., I have one debit card which I use once in a blue moon, a Post Finance account and cash. Nor have I a GPS in my car to help me find a pay 'spot' - allI want to do is get to my brother's place. So, they need to leave at least one barrier in place for those of us who want to pay cash. I can imagine this happening actually. There are still many of us who want to get through life without having chips in our veins.
So you have no computer/laptop (how do you get on the forum then? ), no phone of any kind? In that case I suggest you aim to do the crossing beween 10pm and 6am when it’s still free. Or do it by post:

Cheques? You can't be serious. Yes, of course I have a computer (but no laptop) and have no intention of starting any online account. If I want to buy a book for instance I go to my local bookshop and get them to order it for me. I then pay cash. My phone is from Migros and used only for emergencies and the occassional text message. It can't do anything else.
Yes, I know, I’m one of them. No phone apart from the landline one, but I do order things like books online. And yes, I still write cheques to pay bills in the UK - though it takes so long for the bills to arrive with me I find myself being pushed to go paperless and pay online to avoid incurring late payment fees.
According to Wiki, it went up to 60p for cars in '84 - I was regularly using it a few years later ('88 if I recall) - and there was a big fibre glass funnelled bin, that you could toss the money in without stopping and arrive at the barrier as it started to rise ...... but if you missed the bucket, you were fracked .
