Dashcam Advice

So he's breaking the law by uploading the video as it's for entertainment (his words) and shows minor misdemeanors.

ça va pas laaaaa

Well, I'm not a lawyer.

An investigation is started by the judiciary itself, or a complain from an individual is needed for something to start?

Per 100'000 residents but per 100'000 vechicles it's quite a bit higher in the UK.

Sounds good! How easy is it installing these things?

It depends a little bit on the vehicle and how tidy you want it to look. Basic install and plug into cigarette lighter? You'll be done in 2 minutes.

For a more permanent installation, buy a fuse-tap and run the wiring through the headliner. It took me about 30 minutes to install my front-facing camera, but my fuse box is in the cabin (not in the engine bay) and it was easy to tuck the wiring under the door seals.

If you are running a front-and-rear setup, it will depend on how easily you can run the wiring to the rear camera.

Thanks!

After wasting a day figuring what may be best, am now considering either the Garmin mini 2 or Viofo A119 Mini 2.

At the moment tending towards the Viofo. Believe it will be discreet enough.

Most modern cars have a built-in webcam.

Only activated if your car experiences accelerations above a predefined threshold (maximum braking or accident), or voice commands. Those pesky privacy laws

If the purpose is recording how others crash or the bad behavior of others for entertainment purposes...a dashcam like the ones discussed is needed.

No, Tesla records continuously while driving and something like BMW Drive Recorder can also be started manually.

You're right, forgot Tesla. On the other hand, there are issues with Teslas recording even in parkings But the cars do have the capability.

I asked the local BMW for a dashcam retrofit and they said "recording triggered by acceleration or voice", boooring. More precisely, the camera is active all the time, but the writing of video stored on temp memory to long-term memory is activated by acceleration or voice command.

This is a good video I watched recently. Might help you a bit !!

This statement is not quite true, unless you own a Tesla, BMW (who have iDrive 7.0 and above), and Mercs (MBUX Infor systems). Other 'modern' cars do not have this as standard at all.

These are all top of the range cars, not exactly 'cheap' cars.

You can have the option to have a USB port in the rear view mirror, but again that costs extra for that option.

I've bit the bullet and bought a Garmin 57. Quite tiny and has all the necessary features. Will see how it goes.

Awesome. What is your understanding of Swiss law (in general)?

OK to record?

"Leak" to 20min?

Publish in social media the outcome of a crash in secondary road at 30kmh?

Recording is a grey area, but I am happy to go with that. Many modern trams and light rail here are fitted with cameras, and they have no clear exemption. Publishing or disseminating images or footage is what could land you in trouble. I'd only provide footage to police, and then only in case of an accident or criminal event. I wouldn't bother with non-accident driving behaviour, the police are not interested.

Hypothetically, if you put in on Youtube, for example, with a non-helpful user-name and a link to a Google gmail-address only for that account, how would the Swiss Police stop you?

Would they just get Google to close down the Youtube account or go further, and if so, how?

I believe I have the right to record just about anything, provided I don’t actually use it.

But if I was to give it to the police to aid them in their investigation of an accident I would not have broken any law*.

I don’t actually do much social media so that question is moot.

*This was said to me by a Nyon long-term police officer. They might, or might not, use it in their investigations but quality is often an issue.

Update!

So have got the Viofo Mini 2 from Digitec

Clearly a parallel import. Came with Polish user manual and device started in Polish (I assume).

Fortunately could change the language via menu to English. And could even turn off the sound altogether. All in all am quite satisfied with the device and supplied extras. Recording quality is superb and the device is hidden from view behind the rear view mirror. It also has blue tooth providing live view to the phone.

What's the link to your Youtube channel?
