Devastating fire resulting in explosions in bar in Crans Montana

Bit odd that only he’s in custody, at least to me. Both owners would have the same flight risk.

It’s Switzerland. The wife won’t leave without the husband

Well, she was the one who fled with the cash… :ogre:

I read that he was in custody as a flight risk for financial stuff rather than the fire as that was the only thing they could keep him in custody for.
Probably why his wife was released if she’s not implicated in that.

" DRAMA OF CRANS-MONTANA: A new disclaimer in the Valais building law could protect the municipality of Crans-Montana (VS) from compensation claims after the dramatic fire at the bar “Le Constellation”, the newspaper Blick reported on Saturday. On 1 January 2026, Article 25 of the legislation was supplemented by a paragraph in Article 37, which states: “The competent authority shall not be liable for damage resulting from non-compliance with the provisions of this Law by the project owners and their representatives”. “The new Article 37 applies to the fire in Crans-Montana, because the damage occurred while the new provision was in force,” explains National Councillor Pascal Schmid (SVP/TG), who is a lawyer by profession. However, the courts could base themselves on a “plural offence” and assess the breach of the duty of supervision under the old law, he adds."

Charlie Hebdo:

I don’t find this particularly funny or thought provoking

What were they thinking?

Not a lot, it seems. Ridiculing the victims of a tragedy is about as low as it gets.

There’s a whole raft of other parties involved that they could have taken aim at, if they were hellbent on making light of such a thing. Bar owners? Mayor? Authorities?

But the VICTIMS? WTAF?

Exactly.

That is in extremely poor taste in my opinion.
What on earth were they thinking? Not much apparently, they clearly have no respect for the victims and their families.

There must be some context for such a crap comic? Maybe some of those who said they’re traumatised or injured were spotted on the slopes already? Even so, extremely poor taste barely covers it!

Please remember that the Municipality of Crans-Montana are the major victims here.

Apparently this is a reference reference to the famous French film “Les Bronzés font du ski” (French Fried Vacation 2).

I agree not funny or appropriate

Well, let’s take a dive in twitter sewage, hope my drysuit is waterproof…

Marton, I’m impressed:

My only comment is that instead of national day of regret, there should be national days of action. We have like ~250 of them each year.

Well, national day of grief yesterday, time to move on into the next topics:

AXA Switzerland provides public liability insurance for the municipality of Crans-Montana and business liability insurance for the bar «Le Constellation,» the insurer said in a statement released on Thursday evening. Both had taken out standard, industry-typical insurance policies with contractually limited coverage sums with AXA. The insurer did not disclose the maximum amount of these obligations.

It seems the events will hit hard the insurance company. Why bring the Swiss Federal Government into a cantonal issue? Because the pockets of the Federal Government are deeper?

AXA has proposed establishing a round table. Ideally under the leadership of the federal government, all parties involved—including representatives of the victims and the public authorities, as well as the liability, property, accident and health insurers concerned—would work together to define pragmatic and long-term sustainable solutions to cover the financial losses of the surviving victims and the bereaved.

AXA has offered to support such a round table with its expertise and experience in dealing with catastrophic events. «The task now is to stand together and, by joining forces, ensure that those affected by this tragedy receive help as quickly and as straightforwardly as possible».

Beyond criminal, civil and administrative law, there are insurance contracts. This week all the public declarations of Crans-Montana municipal and Valais cantonal authorities made clear that fire safety is lacking attention. In this context, what will insurance companies do? I’d expect higher premiums that take into account all the uncertainty in Valais. Also, this may become a study case for future students, don’t insure business and the government in charge of oversight. If something goes wrong, it’s a combo hit.

The context is that private insurance companies will probably take a 260 million CHF (estimate) hit with the Blatten landslide. How much this time?

given other issues that seem to be arising around the owners, on operations around the different businesses and assets they owned, I can imagine that there will be additional claims, fines, retroactive audits, and tax reconsiderations by the local and cantonal authorities…

Just being curious, are there any news if any of the “smart” adults which were streaming the fire survived?

Considering how quickly their videos appeared on social media, I’d say yes.

I assume these were streamed, not recorded and sent later, but I don’t follow the social apps.
