Done the same myself for sofas. Ordered from Laura Ashley when on sale. They were made to order. I then had them delivered to Allied Pickfords removals depo in Enfield. They were then put on a part load removal van. When the lorry arrived it parked right in the middle of Seefeld ' No permit required' as' no one was gonna tow that mumma away!
This was the second time I have ordered sofas from them and also had them delivered by Allied Pickfords. I didn't pay any import tax and also recieved my VAT back after sending my delivery note back to the UK.
It was a brilliant service from both companies. I believe the sofas were 40% off at the time and it cost about £300+ to be delivered.
I called up DFS and asked them about the delivery, they said they charge around 1100 GBP for the one I am looking for - but the downside is that there is no guarantee. If you are resident in the UK, you get 10 years guarantee for it, but if they deliver to Switzerland, they said that as soon as the delivery man is out, their job is done, no matter what the issue is. If we catch some obvious defect, then the delivery man will take it back and replace it.
Given the fact that I am planning to spend a lot of money on the sofa, its shipping and the swiss customs, I am a bit worried about the lack of guarantee. So wanted to see with others out there who have done the same...what are your thoughts?
I've been searching for a new sofa here for over a year and still haven't found one that I like.
Nice post, I will point some of my enquiries to this thread when they say my charges are to high for door to door service from the UK to here.
They were clear that they would not honour the guarantee outside UK.
After a kerfuffle, we had to provide bill of lading and couple of other docs to DFS - 8 months later we got VAT refund in full.
Delivery cost around 600 GBP : regular weekly run from UK to CH. ( we have delivered to Zurich and Lauterbrunnen)
Customs clearance and CH VAT sorted by local agent : cost around 375 CHF
UK VAT rebate ( 20%) quickly processed onto Credit card usually covers a bit of the transport as well as the customs etc
Honestly not sure what you need a guarantee for on a sofa : these are British build and honestly last decades ( we have two that are now 12 years +) I know it sounds like I'm on commission BUT why not sing the praise of great UK manufacturing and customer service.
Trouble is we are now done on sofas for next 10 years !!
Need a few new sofas and most probably going to go the Laura Ashley route ..
We tried Inpuncto in Lorrach and Schweigert in Maulburg but we couldn't find any L-shaped sofa that was decent with good back support at a reasonable price.
Another option would be to repair the foam in our faux leather sofa if anyone has a number of an upholster or sofa foam repairer?
Does anyone know when they have their sales?
