Discriminatory Anti American Banking Law passed

I heard recently that if you are having your paycheck deposited into an account, you are safe.

But who knows?

I think the banks should calculate the cost of compliance and pass that on to the customer instead of just outright refusing to open an account. Let the customer decide if they want to pay it or not. I totally understand how a bank would not want to bear this cost for someone without significant assets.

Let's just hope the US government doesn't make it so difficult for us that we either have to: 1) repatriate, i.e. return to the US or 2) expatriate, i.e. give up US citizenship.

If forced, I would reluctantly choose option 2.

no more holes in our Emmentaler for you!

Thank you for this info, I just arrived on the 7th and my wife is Swiss. And because of the over reaching US Gov. She was denied by her bank she was with her whole lifetime, to move from Urmein to Chur. Because she lived in the US the last 12 years, and over 6 months this year. I can not have access to her accounts with a bank card (for now) because I have a blue passport. I, for the next 3 months will be a the Houseman taking care of the domestic work, taking care of my daughter and doing the cleaning and shopping etc. She has to withdraw cash for me to do the shopping, instead of using a CC.

On another note UBS a few years ago, shut down her account and force her to take her investments (at a loss) to the US UBS bank.

I will check out these banks you have listed and see if I can get an account. then she can just wire my bank the funds so I can use a CC for transactions.

We (both American) opened a UBS account here with no problems just a few months ago. Hopefully things haven't deteriorated so much in that amount of time. You should be able to open an account after filling out a form saying UBS can share your banking info with the US.

Well, you all voted these guys into office, somehow.

I'm not sure how difficult it is to get absentee-vote documents for various non-EU countries, but for Germany, it's relatively easy.

There was a time, a couple of years ago during the investment-bubble, when people at UBS thought they didn't really need small customers anymore.

Retail-banking was almost a swearword.

They actively managed out a lot of these small customers then.

All this seems comically reminiscent of a situation that occurred 237 years ago. A tyrant nation across the Atlantic ocean treating it's own citizens increasing unfairly.

I feel like I should get on a horse and ride through the middle of Zurich shouting "The IRS are coming, the IRS are coming!".

Easy enough to get an absentee ballot for the US. However, many states don't bother to count them unless a race is very close. So we vote, but it's not clear it matters.

I was not able to vote for any congressman/woman that was not in my state. So, sir, I did not vote for Eric Cantor, Bohner, Mitch McConnell and the lot, or was I allowed to vote against them, by voting for someone else.

Also keep in mind that the corporate overlords with deep pockets, use the conservative right, to mass manipulate the christian right in to fearing socialism, communism or fascism or some other ism, in order to get them to vote for representation (congress members) that have actually the best deal for the corporate overlords in mind when they make laws. The radical christian right want a theocracy and disbelieve any science that proves their views invalid. They consistently vote for liars, that use wedge issues like abortion, Homosexual equality and marriage rights, to pursue their agenda of global domination, with the military industrial complex being funded by the taxes collected... it is hopeless... the blind being led by the naked or something like that :-)

And I would vote for them again. I can't vote in Switzerland, but I am sure that is not what you meant. The Swiss ask the same info as the US now wants to on their tax forms. And instead of going 50/50 on tax evaders, the Swiss banks have decided to play the revenge game.

You can't expect the only reason that Switzerland has a strong banking industry is because it is one step above the Cayman islands? The Us is tired of people hiding their stash, and so is the rest of the world. The fact that I am being punished for greedy rich folk, doesn't mean I am going to vote the people out of office that are trying to bring about balance.

Man, I don't normally like serial groaning, but wtf is up with your continued root cause analysis failure?

The US has created a law that makes your value as a customer negative. Full stop. Moral judgments based on shadowy non-facts don't come into it.

The US has created a law that makes your value as a customer negative

True dat! and The US government, has not only created laws to invoke such a negative value... the daily operations of covert CIA ops and other government agencies really make people hate Americans... it's my wish to show that not all Americans are turds, that it's a government that is not really run by the people for the people.

Why not re-electing people who represent your political views ?

-

Sure, as the Swiss tax offices WANT the taxes. But no tax-office in Switzerland asks for that info about Swiss people abroad !

-

The Swiss banks

A) have to go ahead on the basis of Swiss laws and of directives of the Bankenaufsicht

B) have to protect their employees from judicial assault from powerful countries

-

Why should the CH banking industry be ahead of the one of the Cayman Islands ?

-

Not only the USA, but most people in the world are tired of tax-evaders. The USA however happens to be more powerful than most other countries

-

Balance of what ? And if you support their position, you have to accept the results.

Oh, the US isn't tired of tax-evaders at all - as long they reside in other countries and deposit their money in the US.

Exactly...And to reiterate, this is an issue that stems from the US, not Suisse - target your frustrations towards the appropriate party

Moreover, Post does ask you to confirm whether you are a US citizen or not when you open an acct - I suppose that permits the IRS or some other authority to access your acct at their discretion

Feeling free yet?

and the USA is even more friendlier in case of Swiss scientists living and working in the USA, and will never reveal info to Swiss tax authorities. THIS is why I asked about the balance, as there in reality is NONE !

Schizophrenic bullies I'd say. Bully smaller countries all the time and then whinge when banks simply refuse to continue working under these conditions.

Absolutely. Those US chaps believe that those bankers in CH and elsewhere were masochists

So I can't use the fact that Somali's can claim this benefit, when I cannot? Should I seek out a whiter nation to use as an example. Sorry, but America is 50.1% shades of color more then white now. So perhaps I can qualify using Somalia, that factually does mean they can take the child allowance and I can't.

Did I just discriminate because I said one nation of people could take the child allowance, while another cannot? Damn, being termed a racist has grown far past it's actual meaning. In that case I apologize, and I also apologize to the herbavores as well. I am sure their feelings were hurt as well when I said Nation X as opposed to Nation Q got certain benefits over others. Really.
sure. just give up your US passport and go for Somali nationality.

sure. just give up your US passport and go for Somali nationality.
What benefit can Somalis claim that you cannot ????

Has the USA been in a civil war situation for more than 20 years ?

What shades of "white" the USA is is not of relevance. But the government in Mogadishu never tried to influence Swiss jurisdiction at any time

You can take child allowance under the same conditions as a Somali national, and with your nationality you will have it much easier than Somali or Eritreans

The situation with maintaining bank accounts in Switzerland is fluid. According to this March 19, 2012 "Blick" article, Postfinance, will be able to exclude customers who pose a legal or reputational risk to it. The CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce is protesting this.

I'm still waiting patiently for the US Ambassador to Switzerland, Donald Beyer, to jump to our defense.
