Right, I fell for hindsight bias. Now we know, hundreds of years before we didn’t.

Moreover, deforested soil doesn’t generally get washed away in a couple years around here. Which forces more deforestation in the Amazonas once the land doesn’t produce any longer.

Greenpeace missed the (ab)use of antibiotics in cattle farming in Brazil. This will take a while to fix. Months? Years?.

EU suspends Brazilian meat imports over health concerns

The European Commission said Brazil has failed to provide sufficient guarantees that its exports meet EU standards aimed at preventing the misuse of antibiotics in livestock farming. The bloc bans the use of antimicrobials to promote growth in livestock, as part of efforts to curb antimicrobial resistance.

Not good for food prices:

Brazil is a key supplier to the EU, accounting for roughly 25% of chicken imports and 25% of beef imports, meaning any disruption would be significant.

A suspension would tighten EU beef and chicken supply and push prices higher. While impact in beef markets would be more pronounced in premium segments, the impact in poultry would strike across categories.

While the EU would increase sourcing from alternative suppliers – most likely Argentina, Uruguay, and Australia for beef, and Ukraine, Thailand, and China for poultry – it is unlikely that these sources would fully compensate the volumes missing from Brazil.

Switzerland usually aligns with the EU decisions about food safety, a press release from CH should come out soon.
