Does meditation work for you?

Yes, maybe in some cases. The article you referred to above was work by John Gruzelier. Basically, the problems arises from our learning skills. Sometimes we become too narrowly focused and try too hard. if we can be more calm in our learning then we can absorb more.

In some cases the problem arises from one part of the brain not communicating with the other.

Learning a language is a tough one. There was a belief that there were 2 centers for the language but recently they have discovered that language is throughout the brain.

In some cases for instance, such as a stroke person it can help by exercising that part of the brain that has been affected by the stroke.

In learning anything it takes practice.

Yes, I am aware of the hemi sync.

A lot of research and work in sound has evolved out of the work of Tomatis.

I think that much of our ability is affected by a busy brain or a brain that can not stay on task. No matter how hard you try you get more frustrated.

I must say there is some great things developing now adays.

He was a great Man.

Some are working on videogames with biofeedback. It is still in the vein of operant conditioning. At present I believe that they are working on how to make failure interesting to participants and how to mantain flow of the video.

All brains are unique, some people have massive water-filled ventricles in the brainyet still go-on to higher education becuase of the brain's plasticity.

I wonder if it can actually help TBI patients to remap their own brains and create new neural pathways. I think that it could be used effectively with children to recover from abuse of course it needs to be backed up with a loving, supportive environment etc. I do not like children to be drugged up, but cannot deny that drugs play an important role.

I am interested in the work of Decety and Cacioppo, stuff like this:

Loneliness Affects How The Brain Operates

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2009) — Social isolation affects how people behave as well as how their brains operate, a study at the University of Chicago shows.

Yes, they have been working on developing games with feedback for awhile.

Acceptance of failure or mistakes is a huge step.

Yes, with all of the new research the biggest discovery was the brains plasticity. knowing this gives us hope that change is possible. Actually the 1990s were referred to as the decade of the brain. many discoveries were made at this time.

Yes it can help with TBI, even stroke patients although it can take some time as it is a training. Yes, we can retrain the brain.

Dr. Daniel Amen has done some great work with his work with spect images. In part of my assessment when people first come to me is a question of whether they have hit their heads. Many times neurologists miss the damage of TBI. It may not show up or may be missed. With the new software equipment of the QEEG it can be detected.

When a child hits their head a good indication that there is a problem is a change in temperament What can happen is that the communication between parts of the brain can be affected.

Here is a link on some recent rsearch on TBI

Does somebody hear about isochrones sounds ?

I was reading a french newsletter and it seems they are far more effective than the binaural sounds (used by Hemy-synch) ?

actually not..i just can not concentrate..but yes..it does work for my husband...but not my cup of tea

Actually, it is not the ability to concentrate that is the problem. I am sure that when you find something of interest you can hyper focus. The problem is the ability to sit for a long periods of time with out doing anything. I have worked with a number of people who have had the same experience as you. Unfortunately after having these experiences people give up. For some people to sit still doing nothing can be extremely boring resulting in a painful experience. It is not a lack of self discipline but just an inability to do so. I have helped people to get in lower states of mind and it is not a painful experience.

I use prayers , i guess thats as good as meditation is to others , plus they get answered .

That's nice Ywes, a good positve prayer can put you into a very nice state of mind

fast turning into a prayer forum , but i have to say so many of mine and other peoples prayers get answered that it would be hard NOT to believe.

god bless

yes it might be the same u mentioned .. it actually do not interest me and when i try doing this ..i think i am forcing myself...

Exactly. In this instance if we need to use force then it becomes a painful experience. The best is when the motivator is a want to rather than a should or have to. A major problem now adays is when people are forcing themselves to do or be. Sometimes this can lead to burnout where there is no real reward.

I think that another problem arises when we feel we need to be perfect at what we are doing. When I help people to learn to reflect I suggest that they do the best they can for what ever length of time. It does not have to be perfect.

The other key is no expectations.

Just checked this thread that I started way back when, and was happily surprised to see 8 pages.

A quick update on my experience since starting this thread. I became a father on my birthday in September and I have to say I find my son to be very Zen, calming, centering or whatever you want to label it. This is very fortunate, as I have never been great at self-discipline for meditation or any routines, and he is always around to interact with. Perhaps its just simple, natural beauty that works for me, as going to the mountains, deserts, or seas has always been when I felt the most spiritual and awed. All this being said, I could write back in a few years from now, and his calming effect on me might have ebbed with the toddler years and such. But, I'm thinking it will always remain at some basic level.

O nice to hear from you Arizona Ben !!!

And congratulations of course to your new role as father !!

What a lucky man you are.

Actually it is the parents who are supposed to have a calming influence on the children but unfortunately now adays it seems to be the opposite. I have had parents bring their children to me to fix the children where it is the parents who need the fixing/calming. but every so often I get parents who do work on themselves which has a dramatic affect on their children. What a pleasure this work is.

There has been much written about the discovery of the mirror neurons in the brains of children brains which allows them to mirror their parents and thus learn.

My children have been my greatest of teachers. They have taught me about patience, giving, loving, etc.

Many years ago my son was diagnosed with a learning disorder and our response was whew it is not our fault. But I soon learned that I had a responsibility to calm down, accept him the way he was and to work on my response to him. He really did help me.

Yes, simplicity, this is what really need in life. You are fortunate that you can enjoy nature and that it has this affect on you., There are many now a days who can not experience this because they are just too busy even when there are on vacation.
