Driving in Italy or France - Average speed radar

They definitely exist in France and tend to be smaller devices than the usual speed cameras but all the same they're visible as big boxes a top a post beside the road, look up images for "radar tronçon" to see them.

They trip if you're 5km/h over the limit, eg if a section of road is limited to 80km/h and you do 86km/h then it'll log you at 81km/h and it's bonjour to a fine in the post.

I regularly drive from Lugano to Malpensa airport and vv, often early morning or late evening. There's usually very little traffic so I go 160+. Touching wood as I type this, I've never had a fine, but an Italian friend told me they do not bother with foreign registered cars, but I've no idea if this is true or not.

France is a different matter. Within a week of being flashed the fine arrives by post. My advice is to pay it immediately. If not it gets passed to the Swiss police for enforcement who not only add a fee (typical) for doing so but can also add an administrative penalty, such as a ban, if you were doing more than 30kph even though the French only take your licence at 40kph+ on the autoroutes.

As a PS to my post above, I came across this interesting link from the Swiss Fedpol site.

The Italian part is interesting and worth a read.

original poster here: as I mentioned <>>

what's bizarre is that --- even though the sign say's (and my GPS say's) there is a average speed check, I MANY times DONT see any camera there? So to go back to my original thoughts, how do they do that -- I see no camera at the beginning and no camera at the end of the area. it's weird.

Maybe it's on an overhead gantry instead of on a post next to the carriageway?

Maybe there are no cameras, and it's all a con. Why not drive a consistent 160 km/h next time you're over there and tell us how it goes?

no idea what system the italians are using, but modern camera are pretty hard to spot eg

Cameras are positioned On the bridge that often says "Controllo della velocità con sistema Tutor", so not on the road level.

However, as others have said, I have never received any speed fine from the "Tutor systems" in 15 yrs of driving "proudly" beyond 130.

Perhaps because the police have put up a whopping great green sign smack in front of the cameras?!

Reminds me of this internet favourite:

Not really, the cameras record the back of your car, not the front, so they are positioned towards the direction of driving.

Bumping this up just to tell that the "TUTOR" mechanism has been re-enabled after the end of a trial.

List of sections where the "Safety tutor" is supposed to be enabled available at the following link (in Italian)
