Dropbox Requiring Age Verification

Hi there!

In the last few hours Dropbox signed me out of all my devices and sent a message telling me that I have to give them my date of birth.

I've been a paying customer (and reasonably happy at that) for 5 or 6 years now, no issues. Now they tell me:

To stay in compliance with legal regulations, Dropbox users may be required to enter their date of birth. Until you provide your information, you cannot access your account or its content.

If you’re in the United States: You must be 13 or older. If you’re outside the United States: You must be 16 or older.

Note: Depending on where you live, there may be laws or regulations that require you to be older for Dropbox to legally provide services to you without parental consent. In those cases, you must be that age.

Now, this is their service and if they want my Date of Birth for me to use their products, that's one thing. But my question is, does Switzerland force Dropbox to capture my Date of Birth in order to be a user, or are they just blowing smoke up my nether regions?

Thanks!

Any reason why you can't give them a fictitious date of birth? If they're not asking for documentation to support, then I don't see what it has to do with them.

That's exactly what I did.

What I am most curious about though is their claim that they are somehow required to collect that information by, presumably, some government.

That's what I'm wondering, as a Swiss resident (not citizen) do they really have to get my Date of Birth to keep me as a customer?
