So 60 mins in a gym might be enough to burn off a burger then.
When I mentioned the research behind this discovery on EF, no one believed me.
A scientist discovered this through research, testing and months of analysising data comparing daily calorie expenditure of an indigenous hunter-gather tribe and a group of office workers.
He didnât believe it himself so spent the next few months repeating the experiment only to get the same results.
Your background calorie burn includes sub-concious exercise - An endurance athlete can sit still and relax but other people appear to fidget a lot, even if they donât realise it but that alone wonât count for the big difference.
The major difference was being (relatively) unhealthy means your body is constantly burning calories fighting inflammation and illness.
What this means in real terms is if you want to lose weight (fat), you will primarily need to do it by cutting calorie intake.
Everyone should exercise anyway to stay healthy now, and in the future.
Yes, but most people go for a cheese burger and yes, they will have fries and a coke too!
In my experience this type of âfidgetingâ not only helps you burn out some calories but youâre not even feeling hungry anymore. Iâm an experienced super-fast âhouse cleanerâ (my own, which can be a pretty difficult task at times ) and itâs among the best exercises everâŚ
Plus you do all sorts of movement - lift, bend, stretch etc. The point is to incorporate physical exercises in your daily activities without even realising and then starting to dread them; e.g. always take the stairs instead of elevators etc, walk instead of taking the bus or car for short distances etc etc.
Yep, thatâs the hardest part. I mean you do need some heavy exercising for this.
Home exercise at This Old House consists of washing 3 storeys of windows, running up and down 28 stairs twenty times a day, cutting grass with a push-mower, hefting 20-kg boxes of classic-car magazines, and painting something, from the balcony wood to the walls. Who needs a gym?
Depends on the exercise.
I get those 300 cals with 30 mins with a Bulgarian bag.
Only around 13% of that is from fat storage though.
Anybody we know?
I will go and get my coat now
You need oxygen to oxidise fat to use as an energy source. If the exercise is too intense, thereâs not enough oxygen available and youâll switch to glycogen in your muscles. Eventually, replenishing glycogen will tap into fat storage, but weâre neither 100% anaerobic nor 100% aerobic, its a bit of a mix.
Muscles provide a higher basic metabolic rate for two reasons: they are more expensive to maintain and thus require more energy per kg vs fat, but also, exercising them requires maintenence later on to fix the small tears incurred during exercise (in the form of growth hormone which is expensive to produce).
40 min jog âburnsâ more calories vs 40 in the gym, but gym excercise is the best way to avoid the âskinny fatâ body type, so typical among office middle aged jogging men
3 storeys? OMG, you win, hands down. Iâm afraid I still need my gym though. Last year I used to partner with a neighbour but we ended up talking more than exercising so it didnât really work out, not for me at least. I mean I predicted a lot of talking and interuptions but it surpassed even my wild predictions plus I had the feeling we disturbed other people (which she didnât notice or didnât care)âŚwe could have taken a long (firm) walk and talk instead but she didnât seem inclinedâŚI miss my old friend/sport partner who had a ski accident and is taking things slowly for a year or so. Physiotherapy and all that. Anyway, bottom line - now I have to find another place (yeah, I avoid this lady whom I actually like as a person) and ideally a good trainer.
Had to google that. Looks like a heap of fun, although Iâd probably take out half the gym users with it.
I had some boxing lessons once - our local gym had a guest trainer who was a boxer. Absolutely brilliant fun but I could barely lift a teaspoon for about 3 days afterwards.
A burger withou the bun, ketchup and fries is practically calorie free. Just saying.
Remove the patty too and then its calorie negative!
Yeah swinging around a 20 kg bag might not be the safest thing to do on a gym
See? Thatâs why you need to build those muscles. You shouldnât have given up just after those lessons. It would have become less and less strenuous.
(though personally I think I would prefer kickboxing)
Calorie free? That canât be true. It contains a lot of fat and fats have the most calories per gramâŚbetter try grilled breast chicken or other type of lean meat.
I read that quickly and at first I thought you were doing some boxing rounds with someoneâs mother-in-law from Sofia.
I still donât know why you believe that.
@ShirleyNot : I mean I am a (relatively) optimistic person butâŚ
Ouchman seems to be a contenderâŚweâre not playing in that league.
Because its true. 60 min gym = 10 min eating. From an efficiency point of view eliminating 10 min of eating delivers more calorie deficit than 60 min gym:)
Of course, doing both is best, but from a purely efficiency point of view, eliminating a few things from your plate or a whole meal will give you bigger bang for your buck
You still donât know why I believe in scientific research?
Did I miss the something that replaced it?
Do you misunderstand my posts intentionally?
I meant I still donât know why you believe nobody believed you on EF.
Itâs pretty basic and old science.
Take IF for instance: if you eat only say cheeseburgers (and a lot of them) in that 6-8 hours interval when youâre supposed to eat, youâre obviously not going to lose weightâŚor feel any better.
You also mentioned your body is burning calories by fighting inflammation, how do you actually know that? The level of CRP is a pretty good indicator of inflammation, how do you know people who want to lose weight actually have a high level of CRP? Isnât a bit presumptuous?
