Police officer/Padre, I assume you never made a mistake in your life and then you righteously think every speed limit sinner has to be hanged, the history suggests such robotic approach to humanity didn't end up well and in the same country there were very interesting laws that I am sure you would have liked.
Peeled and put in a bag of salt would be an alternative.
It's pretty simple. The laws for speeding are pretty high here, and they count for everyone. There are two ways to avoid the high fines: Don't drive too fast, or don't drive at all.
I mean...you can just flip out at everyone telling you that your brainfart's gonna cost you (they are right, so I'd save yourself your breath), or you can ignore them Those who selfrighteously rub in other people's mistakes are a bit sad.
There are worse offences than speeding. Although I almost didn't get a license for "Ma'am, you have a heavy foot. Do you play piano by any chance or sew on a machine?!"
Wishing you "speedy" recovery from the heavy bill and chin up.
Oh, I have broken the speed limit and been caught - twice. In one case I was next to a lorry at the point where the French motorway went from "normal motorway" to "Breton motorway", which has a different speed limit, so I did not see it, cost 45 Euros. The other time I was going fast intentionally on a completely empty, dry road and got caught, but I was only fined around 150 Euros. Neither of those happened in Switzerland, the fine to time saved ratio is just not acceptable and our roads are typically just too busy with too many distracted people (put down your damn phone, people!) to make speeding a good idea.
What I find interesting is how indignant you are about this. I really hope you've found someone to go with you to the police station, because your attitude is not going to fly with the Swiss police. I'm not in the police, but I am Swiss and have friends who are/were in the police; they get seriously hacked off at people thinking they are above the law for whatever reason and especially when they make it clear that they think the law is stupid. I expect that is a trait shared by coppers all over the world though.
After these words you did convince me you are one of them. and by the way I already went there, the police officer was very happy and polite, they only get sad when the laser gun does not give expected money yield, otherwise everything flies nicely with them.
You need to realise that there are two approaches WRT to punishing stuff that's considered bad.
One follows the approach that creating a dangerous situation is the core problem. A bad outcome is considered a relatively random thing in the sense that you (usually) can't influence whether a given dangerous situation ends with or without someone getting hurt. As a result, there's only a relatively small difference in punishment between creating a dangerous situation with or without bad outcome.
A different approach is to punish according to the outcome, random as it may be. Nobody will bat an eye as long nothing bad happens, but if you're unlucky and cause harm you'll be jailed for life even though you did the very same thing.
The latter is the US approach, perhaps the Russian as well (I wouldn't know). The former however is the Swiss approach, and AFAIK that of all of its neighbour countries - in short, of the civilised world.
That said, I'm quite certain everybody has broken some law or other, with literally zero exceptions. However what you failed to obey is
Probably it is indeed the reason that I cannot wrap my head around , why I have to deal with the police and criminal records for 138 kph on autobahn, in Russia you deal with the police only if you caused damage or someone is hurt, everything else are just fines. Oh well...may be one day I do finally reach the US (sorry don't think it is civilised world here, i think it is just repressed boredom hell)
Switzerland is a very small country (especially if you come from Russia...).
Additionally, people are living very densely upon each other.
In such a situation, it's necessary to have strict rules and have them enforced - else total chaos would break out.
Speeding rules were very lax, decades ago. But a very small number of very excessive speeders ruined it for everybody.
As you might have seen, in a speeding-accident it's often those who are not speeding but involved in the accident nevertheless are hurt or killed while the speeder, often with a bigger, stronger car, survives relatively unscathed.
These outcomes were another reason for the current legislation.
For small fines (250-ish), no police is involved and no courts. Just pay and forget.
BTW: what's the outcome of your visit to the police station?
Did you actually read anything the OP wrote? I don't see indignant, I see someone wanting to know how best to deal with the consequences of their confessed mistake, then refusing to be bullied by a few self-righteous posters who seem unable to stop rubbing salt into the wound.
That was a tongue-in-cheek remark. But if you really think this is boredom hell you should probably consider moving on (or back), life is too short to be miserable all the time.
This is also the explanation why when you google freak traffic accidents, 99% are from Mother Russia. The way Russians are managing traffic is exactly the opposite of how traffic should be managed. Welcome to the developed world, it's a bit of a shock coming from the wilderness, hang in there, you'll either evolve or get broke
I was welcomed to this developed world many years ago and I received my driving license here, so I am the direct product of the local training system *thumbs up*. As earlier mentioned saints like to use vocabulary: "Suck it up", bro.
Could not agree more, just I prefer indeed moving on and not back in life, and particular effort it takes to move on to the US exceeds my current capabilities, but I am not giving up, one day as I said it will happen
I must admit it is so relevant to the topic what to do about a mistake of being born a retard? As I see they are still allowed to drive here
Gosh, registered on this forum, to have a bit of crying corner here among fellow expats, but only Swiss are the ones posting give me a break from your mentality, really... is there any button that my posts will not be seen by them?
gaburko, from the name I can guess you are one of those truckers from Balkans, who likes russian compilations
And for your information, the wilderness is exactly here in Switzerland, such a low general level of education I have never seen in my life, literally feels like talking to mentally challenged people riding tractors in wild fields with cows. I think it's a bit of a shock for you to know that I was driving here without any tickets for many years until this unfortunate thing happened, but who cares a criminal is a criminal, bring it on.... I like this thread, I found the way to channel my reaction towards retards, now I will be driving peacefully
I will post eventually what will be the punishment, just my visit to the police station was short and they asked me my identity details, address, work place and questions about why I was speeding, to what I replied "kein Antwort" and then my financial details, and all that was written in a protokol, which I signed, and then the case is going to the court of St. Gallen.
