Employer not paying for MFA device?

Made me think about a case I read about in 'Bon à Savoir' Romandie consumer magazine. Sion authorities have refused to pay any un-employment benefits to somehow who refused to wear a mask in the restaurant industry during Covid.

It actually is if you are working at a professional level and expecting advancement. You should absolutely not work over time on a regular basis, but there will be times that it is necessary, just as there will be times that colleagues will need to contact you out of office hours. Now you might manage to get away with that kind of stuff, but when you actively start making work for your boss, with nonsense like this, then you move to a different level - you become a problem. And if you don't bring something special to the table, then you can easily replaced.

Indeed, I recently informed an Italian colleague that it is fine for him to email me on days when I'm not in the office, and even expect a response, just not to expect anything that I can't answer without access to my working setup (which is several cabinets full of stuff)

Some companies use MFA apps and also have hard tokens available. It could be good alternative in case your phone is so precious.

I think you technically don't even need a phone. A reasonably recent iPod Touch would probably do as well.

I would hate to carry two phones, TBH.

So much so, that I switched my phone-contract to e-SIM and whenever I'm on-call, I remove the SIM from the on-call phone and insert it in my phone...

They are being unreasonable. If I were as bothered by it as much as you seem to be, I'd immediately start looking for a job with a more sensible employer. What next? Provide your own laptop, but only be allowed to install company approved software?

As Urs Max said - you need to decide if this is a hill you wish to die on.

No one is indispensible. If you think you are, you're very very silly and likely to have an unpleasant surprise one day.

Just go look in grave yard, plenty of irreplacables their

It depends on the job. For me out of office hours means interacting with a freelancer or customer in other time zone or another culture that has a weekend in a different day.

Apart from that, there is nothing that cannot wait until tomorrow or until Monday. Colleagues in Switzerland are just colleagues, not paying customers. If a colleague thinks him/herself above a paying customer.....this colleague is a liability in the long-term.

One of my clients had this policy - queue one of the secretaries turning up at the helpdesk to install the MFA app with her Nokia 3210 (seriously).

After a good bit of "oooh, look at this" by the younger tech support staff, and a few meetings, it was agreed to let her use text message based MFA rather than microsoft authenticator app.

The clothing argument doesn't make sense, as a- your employer doesn't decide what you wear, just provides guidelines, and b- if your employer has specific requirements (e.g. hard hat, boots, PPE, etc) - then they are obliged to pay for that. I've heard of people expensing a custom suit in some cases, where this was seen as a business requirement.

This is the same situation with my wife's company, (Very large well known Swiss company) the staff need to supply their own phone.

However, included, the company covers the cost of all personal communications, so it's a bit of give and take, I guess.

Does your company do the same?

Yes. In my experience, this is true of good employers and good employees in general.

the employer isn't deciding what phone you need to have either. so sounds the same to me.

to some extent.. when compared to his/her colleagues. when the time comes to "restructure" decisions are not done in isolation. inevitably there are comparisons and favoritism plays a role. you don't need to be faster than the lion, only faster than the other guy

sure ask the question, don't like the answer = make a proposal, don't whine about it. proposal not accepted, make another proposal (not necessarily related to the original question). looks for solutions not problems and you'll be fine.

in the case of MFA there are several alternatives: a dongle, a webapp authenticator, an automated phone call, etc...

There are no laws mandating you carry a phone with you.

That said, there are laws around mandating you are clothed in public...

Thus, it's perfectly acceptable to say we expect you to come to work clothed.... not so much to say we expect you to have a phone.

Having a phone is nowadays more or less part of being literate, in the functionalities needed for a office, similar to being able to send an email. So I'd say it can, indeed, be expected of any employee that they do have a phone. Certainly we wouldn't employ anyone without one.

My company supplies one. It's not a huge expense, and frankly it's daft if an employer doesn't do this, if their staff need one. I already had a dual sim phone, so they just sent me a sim card. I can root my phone if I wish.

The problem is that some people forget that standing up to an employer turns out be standing up to another employee who does not feel they are paid enough to put up with your sh*t and unlike you they have the means to solve their problem especially the way Swiss labor law works. So choose your battles carefully.

a former employer required that i use my halbtax for train travel but wouldn't pay for it. i guess people on here fall into 2 camps:

1. those that use the halbtax and accept it

2. those that would advocate paying full price for the train fare and try to expense that just to prove a point.

As with most things, it is a bit of give and take. You use your personnal phone for work, work pays the abonement, you use your hlaf tax for work related things, maybe you get to travel in 1st class instead of second class or you extract something else as compensation.

In all honesty if a company can't afford to pay for half tax when you need it, maybe time to look elsewhere ?

Some battles makes sense to fight your corner, some not and as it is so easy to let people go here, you really need to choose if it isy worth bothering with.
