This has happened to me too, and it's not a bad thing - makes one think before speaking, as it were. There are several very knowledgable and endlessly patient people on this forum who have given incredibly detailed advice or information to specific questions. Richard on the topic of home ownership and mortgages springs to mind. Overall, I belong in the category of people who have gotten far more out of this forum than I have put back in.

Good advice kate (love the avatar by the way). I have sometimes noticed that there's a lot of newbies welcoming newbies in the intro area. People shouldn't feel bad if they can't contribute - those who haven't arrived in Switzerland yet can always find plenty of action over in the off-topic areas (that is unless they aren't too busy pestering the forum to help them organise every single aspect of their future lives in Switzerland before they arrive).

I think it's perfectly acceptable for people to remain silent if they don't have anything useful to say, but I will admit that those messages urging people to post kind of contradict what I just said. They are annoying messages though

When I post questions on other forums I usually preface it with something like "Hi guys, I've tried to find this in google, and searched these forums, but so far not come up with anything useful. I've spent several hours on this problem and have managed to find x, but can't quite get it to work together with y and z. I've tried a, b, and c already (I saw a useful post from John Smith in the blah blah section, but it didn't work for me). I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction". I find that approach usually works well for me, and I usually try to follow it up with a thank you if I get what I need. If I do find the answer for myself, I always go back to my thread and update it because there will always be others that follow the same trail via a search engine looking for the same information (assuming that I managed to spell correctly in my post).

At the end of the days, it's just good manners.

well ok lob ...there's this one moderator...on the tv/internet/telephone forum...geez,he's so intimidating...i'm terrified of him...and his avatar...it's so inappropriate

are you going to ban me now?

kate

it's just a colon, a p, a left (, a |and a right )

it's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts

Actually one way not to get banned around here is to try to get banned. Just ask this guy .

referring to oneself in the third person is surely a clear sign of trouble...
